Wootini's Weekly Wii Fit Update #6

wootiniwiifit06.jpg

As you can see, my downward spiral continues. Of course, since I'm playing Wii Fit, that's not actually a bad thing. the 35th day of my experiment, I found that I was thisclose to having lost a full ten pounds. According to the game, that's a relatively average rate of weight loss. Don't want to drop too fast! Although this week I found myself a little frustrated with my progress, so the continued downward trend is good. Especially on the weekend, which is where I tend to spike back up a bit. Yay me! I've got more after the jump if you're interested. If not, just keep scrolling down... I'm sure something will catch your eye eventually!

See, when this week began, I found myself a little frustrated that my weight loss seemed to plateau around 178. I'm not doing that much dieting, really, just watching my portions and trying to ease back on the junk. So with the limited cardio available in Wii Fit, the pounds weren't melting off as much as I would've liked. So I decided to run every day, because that seems to be the best aerobic exercise the game offers. In fact, a couple days during the week, I actually had some time in the evening, so I did a little boxing and jogging there, too.

Now that I'm running more, I'm getting tired of the same scenery. And watching the Miis jog alongside has lost its luster as well, although I still get a chuckle when they trip. There's a whole lot of paths that you run by, so how come you never get to take any of them? I recall once in the beginning jogging across like, a robe bridge, but I've never seen it again. Why can't I jog through the windmills instead of around by the lighthouse? Why include all these paths if they're never going to be used? Because I'd assume that even if the path is randomly generated every time you run, I'd have seen at least a couple alternatives since I'm doing it every single day. I've also begun finding a strong pace to run at. You can't go too faster than the trainer or the game scolds you, but you can quicken your pace a bit more. I even got 241%, whatever that percentage means. I think it means I did over twice as fast as normal. You know, like 100% is how you're supposed to go, a baseline or something, so 200% is twice that. Of course, it's not like Wii Fit explains any of this, so whatever.

I'm still finding myself amused by some of the quirky little moments in the game. Once I did the step with Jesus on one side and Satan on the other. Typical, really, stuck in the middle... Oh, and one time I went to do the plank challenge — for the fourth or fifth time, I think — and the trainer told me: "I'm feeling a little off today. Come back again later." The hell? The game is too tired to accept my challenge? So I couldn't do the exercise. Weird. At least I got a minute of credit, even though I didn't do anything.

And since I'd been able to do 10 push-up/side planks pretty regularly without falling over, I figured I'd give it a shot and go for 20. I really wish they'd given you 16 as an option, though. Going from 6 to 10 was doable, but 10 to 20 was quite a shock to my withered upper body muscles. It was as tough as I thought it would be, but I managed to get through it! Then the next day, I did it again, and pushed through the pain once more! Go me! (Of course, after you finish, the trainer says that when you get used to it to do more reps, so I live in fear that after doing 20 reps for a handful of times, it'll urge me to go for 30! Yikes!)

Interesting. After reading your updates, I think I'm getting the idea of where Nintendo was coming from with Wii Fit, along with Miyamoto's infamous comment about how it isn't supposed to make you fit, just "aware of your body".

Out of curiosity, would you say that you are becoming more comfortable with exercising? Have thoughts about branching out of Wii Fit been crossing your mind more often? I'm not trying to push you, I'm just wondering about the game's possible effects on the way someone thinks about fitness and exercise.

Mudd, I wouldn't say it's made me a fitness fiend, but I am definitely more aware of my eating habits, and have adjusted accordingly. Weighing yourself every day will have that effect on you.

The problem is that while I'm inclined to go out for an actual jog around the neighborhood, I simply don't have the time during my day to give it the time it needs, and having tried running before, I know my knees didn't really enjoy it. And they're older now, so they'll give up all the sooner! And joining a gym is just too expensive. And with my work schedule, I'm not likely to go very often.

So for now, Wii Fit is all I've got. But even if it gets me moving and makes me think twice before eating junk food, then it's been worth the money.

I myself have lost roughly 5 pounds over the last month with wii-fit, mind you I wasn't overweight to begin with, just normal. So I think of it as more of just toning up my body and becoming more aware of myself.

I'll tell you it certainly has my mark of approval. I just finished my nightly workout now and all winter I was feeling crappy about my body but now I feel great, and just in time for bikini season.

In my own experiments with running on Wii fit I have managed to change my path a few times by accident. With me I accidentally ran past the trainer as a dog was running alongside us and I started to follow the dog instead of the trainer. This led me to at least 2 different paths that I haven't seen while running with the trainer. Once even leading into a jump from a cliff midway through the path.

Not sure if its just the dogs that take you on new paths or if other Miis would do the same. My running seems to be a bit inconsistent still.

I *highly* recommend picking up Eye Toy Kinetic for the PS2. It is *fantastic* when used in conjuntion with Wii fit...

Simply boot up Wii fit and weigh in, and then go do some Kinetic, and input Wii fit's info, then after doing aerobics, when it's time to do Yoga and stuff in Kinetic, go back to Wii Fit, input that you did some heavy excersize, and voila! You've got a full-on excersize program with a schedule and super fun aerobics from Kinetic coupled with Wii fit's weighing in and organizing...

And Kinetic includes things like stretching and warm-ups.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
