GRID Having Problems On The Xbox 360?

grid01.jpg

Since its European release last week, a number of gamers have been complaining of problems regarding the Xbox 360 version of Race Driver: GRID. Specifically, playing offline with replays enabled causes the game to become unplayable for some users. According to the game's Executive Producer "Uncle Chewy" (probably not his real name), the company is aware of the problem, is working on a solution, and even offers a back-up plan.

We're close to getting to the root of the problem and we will be including a fix and a backup workaround option (just in case) in our forthcoming patch due within the next few weeks or sooner. We think the issue is due to specific drive hardware, possibly with bad blocks /sectors.

The best temporary measure is to copy your gamertag to a mem card, remove the hard drive and run the game that way. Replays and caching will be disabled, though instant replay will still work as this caches to memory.

With all the different hardware revisions and changes this generation, I don't doubt that problems like this will be more prevalent in the future. We recently saw a similar problem with GTA4 on certain PS3s. It's almost impossible for game companies to test on all the different combinations of hardware out there, and when a bug like this arises, even if the number of customers affected is small, it's still frustrating and can turn potential customers away. Hopefully lessons learned from the current hardware instability will result in more solid, reliable machines and software next generation.

The North American version of GRID launches this week, and although there's no word on whether this bug affects that version of the game, if you're interested you may want to wait and see.

This was supposedly one of the advantages of consoles over PCs. The developers should have an easier time as they DON'T need to test on various hardware versions and types. Unfortunately, as consoles become more like PC, they will slowly lose all their advantages that console status is suppose to have.

I have no doubt that in the future we will get so called upgradable consoles.

MME, we've had upgradeable consoles for well over a decade now. Take a look at the Sega CD or 32X. They were basically "upgrades" for the Genesis. The Xbox 360 and PS3 with their cameras, replaceable hard drives and such are just bringing it to whole new levels. And if you consider accessories like controllers and such to be upgrades then consoles have been upgradeable pretty much since the beginning.

Although what you say is mainly true, I was really talking about major hardware upgrades than addons or peripherials. Something that will affect existing games such as extra RAM (which admittely the N64 did), or a complete change in graphic cards, or even the processor. I assume during these events, developers will do what they currently do for the PC and make games for the lowest denominator.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
