How Long? Really? REALLY?

popcorn_man.jpg

Warm up the popcorn machine when you start up Metal Gear Solid 4, folks. It's been revealed in Playstation World Magazine that some of the cutscenes (as in, more than one) in the game will approach the 90 minute mark.

You saw that correctly. An hour and a half. Cutscenes, plural.

The good news is that you can now skip or pause the scenes. Hands up though, how many of you are actually going to sit through the full 90 minutes?

"MGS4's story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc," says the mag.

I'm not sure what the hell the MGS4 devs are smoking here. Personally, I feel less likely to play it now. Are they going to warn the player when an upcoming cutscene is gonna be a long one? I'm am very conflicted here. My gaming time is limited, and personally, I'm of the opinion that most things relevant to the plot could be through gameplay.

So who's gonna sit through it all?

I wouldn't mind at all as long as they keep the story good.
The storyline is my primary reason for buying games afterall. Gameplay comes second and novelty and graphics after that.
But I would like, like you suggested, some kind of indication for when one of these long cutscenes is coming up as well as an option to pause during them.

I agree with Nexus. I'm an absolute whore for awesome plot and Metal Gear Solid games have never EVER left me disappointed. They are still the only games that have made me cry. TWICE even.

Wow... having never played the first three (playing 1 right now, gonna get through 2 and 3 before I buy 4) I feel less interested now.

However, if these games are as AMAZINGZORZ as everyone claims, I will be sucked in enough to get 4 as well.

Hey, look here. I don't care if you can skip or pause the scenes. I just want to play the darn thing! Man! It's been ages since the game was first annonced, can't wait!
And personally, I don't really approve cut scenes these days in video games.
And I give you why in one word: Xenosaga.
I rather play games where you are in the cutscene doing somethin' and interacting like in half-life or Bioshock instead of siting down and watching everything move in motion while you do nothing (and if you skip, you're confused with the storyline). It gives you that feeling of being the hero, not following one.

Final Fantasies have been favorite games of mine due to big immersive stories, and cool cutscenes. Granted, none were a movie in length, but I was happy with that.

I've also never played these games, but hearing that there's a big movie involved won't shy me away from it. I'm curious that the developers wouldn't have broken things up at all (maybe they didn't to avoid lame minigame segments of "Follow this person to your next location").

But I've heard these games are awesome, and since I no longer confuse them with Twisted Metal (I'm no avid gamer), this one i might play.

I just popped in Subsistence today, and am considering playing through it again...that dream was crushed pretty quickly, by the reminder of nearly 30 minutes of constant cutscenes. I then saved and shut it off.

How does the long cut scenes make anybody want to play the game less? I don't get the logic in that - just skip it. Anyway I like cut scenes in games that are well done and add to the experience. Especially a game like MGS which realises heavily on its story - can't wait.

And I thought the last scene in Eternal Sonata was long.

I wish they would add in a Rewind feature for those though. Never know when you might miss something and want to go back and hear it.

The 20 minutes in the last Zelda and 30 in Okami were too long for my tastes. I could see a good long cutscene as the payoff for beating the game (unlike the minute or so they gave you in Bioshock, whose story actually merited something substantial) but an hour and a half before or during it? Isn't that heading a bit into the realm of padding?

Well, most PS3 owners are apparently in love with watching movies on their consoles, so I guess this is a great fit.

I don't mind; I'll watch. I'm okay with the occasional break for air.

I've never been able to understand what the hell is going on in any of the Metal Gear games anyway... That's the single biggest thing keeping me from enjoying that series. So I'm not planning on playing this game anyway, but if I did, I would hope these long ass cutscenes would actually explain what's going on rather than confusing me more (but judging by the previous games I've played, I doubt that would be the case).

I think that CVG is stretching it here. Granted, I think the MGS series could tone down the number of cutscenes (or embrace in-game cutscenes), but it's always been a staple.

hearing that there are cutscenes up to 90 minutes long leaves me feeling less likely to purchase this.

if the "awesome power of Blu-Ray" is so I can sit and watch a game instead of play it, I think that we're moving in the wrong direction.

I had enough gripes about Xenosaga for making me watch more cinemas than letting me play the game in the first few hours.

I'll watch it. I loved Xenosaga and that was mostly movies.

You can skip the cutscenes and I'm sure someone online will make a summary of the story you miss so yeah..

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
