IGN Poll Shows PS3 Popularity Rising

consoleraces.jpg

In a recent poll on IGN.com, readers were asked "Who do you think should win in the next-generation console race?" The results seem to show the PS3 heading to the front of the console race. Out of 1,053,855 votes, 497,351 went to the PS3. The Wii came in next with 325,504 votes and the Xbox 360 followed up with 231,307. Polls are certainly not entirely accurate, but the results certainly are intersting. So, how does this sit with you? is the Ps3 really at the top of the video game console heap?

too bad most of the people that voted for ps3 can't afford one.

My answer was not listed: The DS. This is the platform that is making the most amount of money for it's manufacturer and third parties alike while producing some of the most unique, satisfying, and least expensive games for the player's money. But since they were ignoring handhelds...

Personally, I think that both Sony and MS forgot that this is industry of entertainment first, technology second. Each generation of console gaming history is filled with technical superior failures that were outsold by not-so-high-tech. With that in mind, Wii deserves all of the success it has achieved. It's a reliable, entertaining product at the right price for the right audience. This is much more than I could say about the 360 or PS3.

With $60 games, flaky hardware, multiple SKUs, devs/pubs with out of control budgets, backward compatibility screw ups, and gaming experiences that are nearly identical to "last-gen"... neither 360 or PS3 "deserve" to win.

You forgot to mention that this was not merely an IGN poll, but an IGN KFC(R) Toasted Wraps(tm) poll. So maybe what this actually shows is a correlation between buying $600 consoles and eating subpar fried chicken.

Also, at what point will these machines stop being "next generation" and start being "current generation"? Can we at least agree that the Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox are now "last generation"?

And after MGS4 fails to sell as many consoles as Halo 3 did, what will the next "just you wait till _____ comes out" game be? (Pre-emptive note: I do not own an Xbox 360, nor for that matter any Microsoft products whatsoever. I just have my doubts about the seemingly absurd amount of hope some people have pinned upon a stealth game.)

Owning all three systems, it can be a little wierd when polls like this spring up.. I started with owning a 360 first, which seems to be the only launch system that has survived the infamous RROD menace... that or I just take really good care of my crap.

Anyway, when it came down to releases, I've just always favored the 360 over the PS3. The live integration was nice and seamless to me and while it's true that online play is free on the PS3, I just felt I got much more value with Live. The price tag attached just does not bother me at all. Being more visual minded, I guess I just preferred the look and feel of the 360's blade system as well. The XMB is nice, but to me just feels..bland Before the PS3's update, their online store was just annoying to me. It didn't feel intuitive at all and was just akward to me trying to access things with basically a joystick hunting and pecking links on a website.

The PS3's current linup, save for Ratchet and Clank (my only owned game) hadn't interested me enough to build up my library, unlike the 360 so I rented everything else. Sure, the biggest games like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy are comming, but, my love for those series either faded, or just wasn't there to begin with.

The Wii and 360 however just monopolize a lot of my gaming time and other than a few small purchases on the PSN store, I just don't get that enthused about the PS3. I originally bought it for the sake of running linux on it for media center use, with the added benefit of playing those exclusive titles. Blu Ray isn't even a major concern until those disk prices go down and there are some must have releases. I understand that with some adjustments with your home network, you could have the ps3 access network shares and whatnot, but, like the 360, I hate how it limits the type of files you can run on it. (Some of my videos and audio files just don't run at all) With linux installed, I hoped that I could maybe install a nice media center program like Myth TV, with no restrictions on video or audio files, but I was just dissapointed to find out that the "linux support" was gimped due to locking out the RSX graphics processor.

I want to love the ps3 just as much as I do my Wii and 360 but so far, it's like that middle child in a family that's struggling for attention.

It'll go from "Just wait till MGS4" to "Just wait till Final Fantasy 13." Which will at least make more sense. While MGS doesn't have the pull it once did, FF is the only thing PS3 exclusive that could match Halo 3 or Brawl in sales. This is a much more realistic "Just wait till" than Lair, Heavenly Sword, etc.

@ game-boi: After owning a wii for a year, and then buying an Xbox 360 console, I can say that technology is very entertaining. I can't tell you how stunned I was when I first saw what games with next-gen graphics looked like.

As for the poll, I really have no idea who will win.

Well considering I can't get a Wii anywhere and PS3s are sitting on the shelf gathering dust... I'd say this is innaccurate. Perhaps amongst the 'gaming' community it is accurate, but you have to take into account that the Wii appeals to such a broader audience... many of whom would NOT be active on IGN and therefore were not included.

Well I've decided to finally get a PS3 (40gig with Ratchet&Clank and Drake's for 470euro) after first getting a Wii and then long after launch an elite 360 when it came out in Europe.
Even though I'll end up with all 3, I personally want the 360 to come out as the winner. There's just too much about the PS3 concerning the launch and stuff like those huge install things for games like Lost Planet and DMC4 (at least I think it was those) that bother the hell out of me.

So, you don't own a Windows based PC?

my guess is some sony fan boy (and a few of his friends) was voting for PS3 over and over and over again

raindog469 said:

No, Brendon, not a single Microsoft product. No Windows, no 360, no Office, no Microsoft hardware, not even a Hotmail account. It's just the way things worked out.

It seems that every other article on this website that has Sony's name on it always brings out the Nintendo fagboys who bitch and moan constantly that Sony sucks. It's ok. I get it. It got (REALLY) old back in 1996. Thanks...

Reality. MGS4 will sell. A lot. It will probably sell a lot of PS3's at that...
And while Raindog seems to think that a stealth game won't sell, I have two words for him. Assassin's Creed. It was a sub-par stealth game (a.k.a. wasn't that great) that just so happened to be one of the top selling games of 2007....

raindog469 said:

Well, while your homophobic rhetoric on a site for gay people is awfully convincing, I think you missed the point. Sony has had and is going to have some great selling games.

What they need, though, is a system seller, one that'll make the PS3 the number 1 seller for a few months at least and tip the balance. The PS2 had a lot of those, which was how it became the best selling console in history.

This time around, the system sellers are more spread out. Halo 3 was one, Wii Sports was one, Brawl appears to have been one, FFXIII will probably be one, but I'm pretty sure MGS4 will not be one.

Homophobic rhetoric?! I had a good laugh at that one! It's a tad bit difficult for me to be homophobic and completely out to everyone I know at the same time. I am sorry if the word "fag" offends you. I tend to use that word on a daily basis when referring to myself so I forget from time to time that some people are actually still offended by it.

And I don't really want to be the one who calls you out but I have seen your posts many times on here Raindog and you REALLY have some bent up anger towards Sony. You post negative comments on Sony articles constantly. It's almost as if you troll around here until you see a Sony article and then BAM! Out come the claws to scratch and destroy.

So really now, what's the beef with Sony? I am probably wasting my words here but why can't you be open minded towards other gaming companies besides Nintendo? Why can't you be a true gamer and play everything that's out there?...

Well. Everyone is writing these extensive comments, so I feel it is my duty to NOT do that. In short, Price Drops are everyones friend. If the price was lower out of the gate, the library been decent, and people witnessed and known blu-ray was going to be the winner, it probably would have had a better install base earlier on. That being said, I would probably vote for the 360 to win, even though the Wii is more innovative and the PS3 has more features.

Hey, I have a PS2 and think it's a great system, probably the best of the last generation.

But I think the PS3 was way, way off the mark, I've enumerated why above and in other posts, and I'll continue to say so until they find some way to fix it and repeat the success of the PS2. I enjoyed it when Nintendo fell from grace after their dumb, arrogant moves of the late 90's, and I won't deny I'm enjoying watching Sony fall from grace after dumb, arrogant moves. Schadenfreude is always entertaining.

Meanwhile, I think it's disingenuous of you to claim any kind of impartiality when you refer to fans of other systems as "fagboys". I understand feeling anger about an expensive purchase that didn't live up to its promises, but before you accuse other people of bias, I really think you should look in the mirror.

Or go back and read some of your own posts, as you did with mine. They're pretty enlightening, if not especially enlightened.

While I am sure this thread is deader than dead, I started to read the response with interest, and then I got to this:

"I understand feeling anger about an expensive purchase that didn't live up to its promises..."

Wow Raindog. Do you always tell people how you think they should feel? That's borderline fascism (and very narcissistic) there buddy...

Also, I always love it when people who have spent a major portion of their life conforming into a stereotype use the term "...look in the mirror." You might want to stop yourself next time you think about using that phrase. (What's that phrase again about people who live in glass houses should not throw stones?...)

I did go back and read some of my posts. Except for one late-night drunk comment about Final Fantasy for the Wii that I completely take back in all honesty, the only thing you will find is a gamer with a wide and vast taste in games...

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
