Jack Thompson Retroactively Attempts To Backup Statements, Threatens With Lawsuits
Last week, I talked about the dynamic duo of legitimate media, Jack Thompson and Fox News discussing the recent NIU shooting and how video games are to blame. None of this came as a shock, Jack is a media whore and Fox News is more than willing to give air time any iota of sensationalist fear mongering tripe they can get their grubby biased mitts on. This is all my opinion of course. Now, Jack is attempting to get his hands on records of assailant Kazmierczak's recreational habits, which evidentially caustically link the video games to the event which transpired. A copy of the fax was sent to GamePolitics as it was being sent to whomever at NIU itself.
Pursuant to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, I hereby request production of copies of all documents that reveal Steven Kazmierczak’s play of violent video games, including but not limited to the use of his computer to play Counter-Strike, which he apparently, according to the New York Post, used to rehearse for his Valentine’s Day Massacre at NIU.The killers in the two worst school massacres in history—in Erfurt, Germanay, and at Virginia Tech University—similarly trained on Counter-Strike to rehearse for their killing sprees.
If I am not provided with this information, I shall bring a civil action to secure these documents.
GamePolitics was suspicious of his actions, and asked him if he had actually sent this document off, and here is his response.
Of course I sent it to them, you idiot. The NIU investigators have already responded, professionally, and told me they will get me this information in due time. This is how you do this, which you wouldn’t know.
There are a couple of things "off" with Jack's actions. He is in danger of losing his right to practice law in Florida, and with his high profile, it could potentially be difficult for him to get permission to take the bar exam in other states. If he loses his right to practice law, all that is left for him is his high profile.
He systematically insults and alienates anyone that takes a pro-gaming stance, and anyone with even a passing familiarity with the gaming community knows that we simply don't let things go. We take everything personally. As such, so long as he can keep making us mad, he's not going to go away.
This is only further supported by the fact that the fax he sent to NIU, he immediately carbon copied it to a media outlet that has taken a almost universally negative stance against him. He is rebuilding his lime light. If he loses his law practice, he can always become an "expert for hire". He is already labeled a bad guy, so he can go on Fox News and spout as much anti-gaming drivel as he wants without any real repercussions.
I know I am stating this in an article that seems to feed into the fact that he's desperate for media attention, but I figured I would throw my thoughts out there. As such, I will say this is my last article on Jack Thompson,. He is the Paris Hilton of the gaming industry, and all I can say is that I'm tired of his antics and talking about him is simply giving him what he wants.
Remember kids, you can't kill someone with a video game. Even if it is later proven that video games are essentially "murder simulators", you can't practice a crime without intent to commit a crime. I believe video games should be regulated, but by the parents of children. Mr. Kazmierczak was a grown man fully capable of knowing the gravity of his own actions, as illustrated by him taking his own life. Pointing fingers anywhere else is irresponsible.

Germanay?
Now look Boy of Tomor-
Oh god damn it!
There's an internal battle that goes on in my mind whenever a Jack Thompson article pops up. On the one, it does seem like a good idea to keep gamers updated with whatever Whacko Jacko is up to. On the other hand, you're helping him rebuild this limelight of his. If all the major gaming blogs ignored him, it might help take away from his media power.
This isn't about whackjob, but whatever happened with Fox News and their invitation to EA concerning the Mass Effect fiasco.
Virginia Tech? Didnt they find that that guy had only played one game online and it had been many years earlier?
@Aaron:
Actually, we broke the story that a search warrant revealed Cho didn't own any video games. At all.
irresponsible, yes. But definately easier than getting to the root of the problem.
