Capcom On Devil May Cry 4 Install On PS3: Get Over It!

Rawr!

What's all the hub-bub, Bub? Well, when you pop in the Devil May Cry 4 disc for the PlayStation 3, you get to chill out for 22 minutes or more while the game installs itself onto the system. What does Capcom have to say to those who complain about that? Get over it...so to speak. From Capcom's blog:

Hey, all. It’s true: the first time you drop your DMC4 Blu-Ray disc into your PS3 tray, you’re going to be treated to an exciting 22 - 25 minute load process as the disc spins a few gigs of data onto your hard drive. While the game is loading, you get to watch a really nifty series of screens that completely catch you up on the DMC4 backstory. Think of it as compressing the last three “seasons” into a single info blast, accompanied by some fantastic DMC artwork. It’s great for those new to the series and also a good refresher to serious fans (you can also check out all these screens again later in the Library mode).

If you don’t want to watch the “Previously, on Devil May Cry…” portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back.

Once installed — once, mind, not every time you play, as I’ve seen “reported” on certain web sites less interested in facts than in OMG histrionics — the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times.

Yes it sucks, but if you wait just a few minutes, your patience will be rewarded with all the uninterrupted Nero/Dante hotness your little heart desires. I, for one, would be pretty excited to see the artwork and be brushed up on the events of the series (it's been a while since I've played them through) before I played it. Plus, this is only a one time deal. Now if only I could make up my mind for which console to buy this game on....

Sigh. DMC4 “load times” on PS3. DO NOT PANIC! [Capcom-Unity]

mmmh. Is this what consoles have turned into? Although the process is still miles easier than a PC, I guess they will start putting hard disk space requirements on the back of the box! ;)

I have to agree. Are we really that lazy we can't bear a one-time 20 minute install? Get over it. Play your DS for 20 minutes. I promise you won't die.

While it's too bad that it has to be that way, it'll be ok in the end. That is a very long loading time, but at least it only happens once.

I'd much rather wait for an initial load for the sake of shortened load times while I'm actually playing. I was going to buy the 360 version before I read this, but now I'm definitely going for the PS3 version of the game.

So basically I need to start saving up for the PS3 with the largest hard drive. Is that what Devil May Cry is trying to tell me about the future of gaming? And then when there are so many games like this that I have to choose my recent favorites to keep installed ... yeah, it's like computers. Not that 25 minutes would be so horrible if I suddenly got an urge to replay a game one day. But still, it seems like regression. I vote for more powerful consoles that can load quickly without installation.

Jotch, you actually don't have to save up for the model with the largest HDD; instead of giving all your money to Sony you could buy any PS3 and then substitute your own 2.5' SATA HDD.

Moreover, the load time of any game isn't really restricted by the power of the console, but rather by data transfer rates and memory. Using any optical media, data transfer is horrendously slow. To make up for this consoles have to move as much information as possible to faster mediums. The options are system memory or a HDD. Since memory is costly and HDDs are cheap, hard drives become the much more attractive option.

Video gaming is expensive enough without having to shell out for more expensive consoles or games on cartridges. Believe me, optical media + HDDs are a large step in the right direction.

That said, it would be nice if Capcom gave you the choice to install or not. (Do they give you this option?)

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
