Japanese Love The Wii... Not So Much The Games

wiibox1.jpg

Nintendo released some figures today that put worldwide sales of the Wii at 20.13 million units at the end of the calendar year 2007. That's a mighty impressive number. Software sold 113 million units, which works out to an attach rate of 5.6. Which is to say that the average Wii user also owns 5 or 6 games.

However, that attach rate apparently differs by region. In America, it's higher, at about 6.9. In Europe and other territories, it's at the 5.6 level, but in Japan, it's only 3.4. That is crazy low! Only 16.8 of those 113 million units of software have been sold in Japan. And this is even more surprising considering that over there, Wii Sports isn't a pack-in and has to be purchased separately. What in the world could be causing this? I'm at a loss.

Personally, I own 7 Wii games, which puts me right at that US average attach rate. How about you? And do we have any Japanese readers? What say you?

I'd say in the Japaense average and only own 3 wii games, looking at the quality of the library, im sure i wont have more than 10.

I've had my Wii since March 2007. I own 3 games. Wii Sports, Harry potter and Sonic.

I wouldn't mind Trauma Center 2 and Metroid prime 3 (perhaps) but otherwise nothing out is what I want or I can get it on a better system.

I have 20 games... yikes. And I dont think i've completed a single one. I guess my appetite is bigger than my drive to play - or it's that I work full time, and am in school part time, so said time is limited.. eugh.

Of the games I have, I'd easily sell off a few. But there are already others I want to buy. I'm just stopping myself to save money and because I have a bunch of other games to complete first...

After xmas, I'm definitely above the American average. Zelda, Metroid, Mario Galaxy, Super Monkey Ball, Simpsons, Guitar Hero III, No More Heroes, Super Paper Mario. Actually, looking at that list, this kind of explains the low Japan rate. Most of the games that are really popular in the US aren't in Japan, like Metroid, Simpsons, and Guitar Hero. It remains to be seen if No More Heroes fares better here than Japan.

Right now I have about 18 games. I already have more games for Wii than for the cube and n64 combined.

not including Wii sports I've got four. If you don't include Link's crossbow training, then I've got three. Pokemon Battle Revolution, Geometry Wars Galaxies, and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.

I got 15-16 games mysefl. Odd that in the place where the Wii would sell the most, they don't sell that many games.

TOMATO said:

I only have two games (not including wii sports), and they are Umbrella Chronicles and as of yesterday, No More Heroes. I rent games before I buy them, and that's probably why, because a lot of the games for wii so far are games I'd rather rent and play while I have it than buy it and end up playing for only a couple of weeks. Once longer, more in-depth games start to get released (or polished, worthwhile games like Brawl) I'll probably increase my library.

I think I have 13. There are 3 or 4 more I'd like to buy but haven't yet.

I'd love to know what the Japanese attach rate was for the DS a year after its release, though, because I have to believe that the Wii Sports/Wii Play phenomenon played out on the DS as the Nintendogs/Brain Age phenomenon.

I personally own two games not including wii sports.

I know I'm in the minority here. lol

I have Super Mario Galaxy, and RE4 Wii edition... which I own on both the ps2 and the gamecube.

I'm a Wii owner since day 1.

Pack in Wii Sports
Legend of Zelda
Super Paper Mario

I have about 8 VC games as well. I have always planned on buying a couple others (SMG and RE4: Wii Edition) but haven't had the $$$.

i got the Wii since day one and since that day ive had about 6 to 8 games for it. ive sold many of them and now i only have MKA and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I only got it for Brawl. I can honestly say the games really arent worth having it around, but im hoping Brawl will save me from their mediocre library.
And im a nintendo fanboy since the super nintendo days=(

Including Wii Sports I have 8, Zelda, MP3 Pokemon:Battle Revolution, SMGalaxy, Super Paper Mario, Trauma Center:SO, Zack & Wiki.

It would be interesting to know how many VC games are downloaded, on average, in Japan. I bet that's what the cause is, one of the, if not the best game library ever-Nintendo's, coupled with Sega's, Neo Geo's, TurboGraphix 16, etc.

I've got a lot of VC titles. But standard discs? Sonic and the secret rings (sucked, never play it), Rayman raving rabids (good, but no fun without someone to play with) Marvel Ultimate Alliance (sucked, never play it), Super Paper Mario (love it, played several times) Metroid Prime 3 Corruption (great game, have yet to finish) and Super Mario Galaxy (another great game).

So I'm at 6 games. 7 if you count my imminent purchase of Smash Bros.

The problem is that Metroid, Paper Mario, Galaxy, Smash Bros, and maybe rayman and trauma center are the only games available worth playing on the Wii. The rest are either forgettable, underwhelming, gimiky, or generate no desire to rent, let alone buy. 3rd party developers really seem to be dropping the ball. There really isn't a lot to choose from on this platform, at least not yet.

Carbmac said:

I have 19 games + 1 VC title. Out of those 19, though, only a few I play frequently, such as Nights, Mercury Meltdown, Super Monkey Balls, Link's Crossbow Training and Super Mario Galaxy.

And I agree what was previously said.. there are not many quality games to choose from (and not a lot of games in all offered too).

TexCub said:

Here's mine:

6 Wii games
5 VC games
26 360 games
56 XBLA games
36 DS games

Granted, I would trade out half of the XBLA games if I could.

I remember hearing on multiple occasions that playing/buying/selling used games is more heavily integrated into Japanese culture than American culture. If that's true, then I can certainly believe those figures.

Squeech said:

I don't know how many games I own for Wii, but it's over 10, and I also have about 15 VC games.

MME said:

Where do u guys get the time or money to play all this games???!!! I limit myself to 1 or 2 games a month just so I can try to get time to complete it so I choose the best. If its a particular bad month, I'd probably pick games I have yet to get but must have.

I'm in the UK so the average is about right for me. Let's see:
Mario Galaxy
Wii Sport (doesnt count?)
Wii Play (doesnt count?)
Umbrella Chronicles
Guitar Heroes 3
Mario Party 8
Zelda

I also have 2 VC - Paper Mario and Mario Kart

Here's an idea: because a lot of people think platformers suck. Especially mario ones.

Anyway, I can completely believe those figures because the wii's software library is just utter crap. It has Metroid Prime and Mario Galaxy and apart from that everything is either crap that was built in five minutes and marketed to idiots or stuff thats available on other consoles (yes this includes Twilight Princess).

It probably is not stranger to the fact that BF is working a lot and me is getting bored.. hehe ;)

Not counting Sports and Crossbow, I have 10, but I am in a similar situation as Michael: "I guess my appetite is bigger than my drive to play." I haven't completed any of them. I probably give up too easily when I get stuck, don't have the time or desire to repeat a level very often. But they are not bad games: Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Super Paper Mario, Trauma Center Second Opinion, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Excite Truck, Zack & Wiki, and I can't remember what else.

Well it was cleaning day in the Bunker and much to our surprise we own 10 Wii games.

no quality games?

prime corruption, super mario galaxy, no more heroes, twilight princess, RE4. there are even a few well reviewed sports titles. so you have action/adventure, platformores, hack and slash, 3rdps, sports, parties games. what else do you want?

i'm sorry the Wii isn't big on FPS but there is more.

and according to Microsoft the attach rate for the 360 is 7. considering how much better it's suppose to be and how much longer it's been on the market . . .

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
