HD DVD Group Cancels Press Conference At CES

After the recent announcement of Warner Bros. going Blu-ray exclusive, the HD DVD group has decided to cancel their press conference at the upcoming CES. Warner was one of the final studios on the fence concerning high definition format preference, and their decision to go Blu-ray exclusive is creating a huge impact on the format war. It is still too soon to claim a victor, but with all of the support Blu-ray is getting it seems that Blu-ray will claim their victory soon enough. It will be interesting to see if Blu-ray wins out this generation, how that will affect PS3 sales. The PS3 is one of the cheaper Blu-ray players on the market, and the only one that has upgradable firmware to implement new features as they are created.
There are grumblings around the block about just waiting for the next format to be released and skip this generation entirely. Who says there won't be a format war next generation? Consider the profit a company would gain by creating the dominant media format for a generation. The sum is staggering. So while we consumers sit back and watch the sparks fly, these wars create confusion and disappointment to those who have already chosen their format or are still undecided. If you haven't gone high definition yet, wait a little while longer until the dust settles, but don't miss out on a generation of media. It's not worth waiting until next generation, because there most likely will be another war.

All the talk is that the next gen of media will be downloads. But I don't see that. Not until, that is, they get rid of DRM. There's been too many horror stories of people having their media rights, to things they bought legally, ruined, for various reasons.
I think Blu-Ray will be here for quite a while, 50gigs per disc is an awful lot of room. That and I think people like holding a physical object in their hands and showing off their bookcase of movies, hard to do when they're all on a hard drive.
Agreed, Patrick. I used to think digital downloads would become the prominent delivery mode for movies, but after watching blu-ray movies on my PS3, I just can't imagine getting that sort of experience over the internet (let alone how long it would take to download). 50GB of media isn't something people have the time (or space) to store, so aside from downloadable rentals, I don't see it being a viable format... yet.
Maybe when it doesn't take 3 days to download a movie, and hard drives are so huge that it won't matter, yeah. I think BluRay will be the standard for at least a decade once it becomes mainstream.
Sorry, HD-DVD, but Blu is Better.
