CryEngine Coming To PS3, Xbox 360

Rumors have been swirling for quite some time that developer Crytek would be bringing its bring-your-PC-to-its-knees shooter, Crysis, to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. There's even been talk of a special version of the game for the PlayStation 3 in recent days.
It turns out that these rumors weren't far off form the truth. Crytek is set to bring CryEngine 2 to both consoles. According to GameSpot, the "middleware" will be presented to developers at this year's Game Developers Conference behind closed doors. A fully optimized edition of the CryEngine is expected to make an appearance as well to show that it can indeed run on a $600 budget PC. I suppose we'll see what happens once February 18-22 rolls around. In the meantime, brace for some awesome looking games.

OK...pardon my ignorance, but the CryEngine is hardware, right? Does this mean that current models of the PS3 do not have it, and future models might?
That seems a bit shitty to me, given that the models we have will then effectively be out-of-date.
