PS2 Getting A Price Cut And New Model After Christmas

Like a teenage girl negatively influenced by Hollywood, the Playstation 2 is looking to get thinner and cheaper in an effort to win the attention of its emotionally distant father consumers after Christmas. MCV, a UK-based trade publication, is reporting that Sony plans on releasing a new "compact" version of the hardware with the power supply built in, as well as a 25% price cut, from $129.99 to $99.99. Right now the reports are unconfirmed, and the most specific date given for the release is sometime after the new year starts, presumably to avoid cannibalizing the Playstation 3's holiday sales.
The move is meant to combat the gains that the Wii and Xbox 360 have made in the past year, as PS2 sales have stalled and the PS3 has yet to really take off. With seven years and 120 million units behind it, are there really that many people looking to pick one of these up? I mean, besides owners of broken PS2s looking to replace their systems. With Nintendo expected to gain a lot of momentum this Christmas, only to follow up in the new year with Wii Fit, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, this price cut could go a long way in helping Sony keep its toe in the casual gamer pool.

I'd pick one up. I need a new one. And with the cheaper ps3, it might be the route for some people to take.
Wow I didn't think the PS2 could get much smaller. And to have the power supply built in and be even smaller is even more impressive. And on top of all that, to be cheaper as well! That's pretty nice. I'd be really tempted to get one but I need to have my hard drive and these smaller ones won't fit it...
Great mock up, dawdle darling!
Still owning a PS2 from 1st generation and with no interest in the PS3 whatsoever (going the Wii60 route here, plus PS3 Euro doesen't have any emotions anyway, hot block of black ice that it is...), an even smaller PS2 totally seems buyable to me. Alas, release dates for interesting PS2 titles are growing thinner while the PS3 finally picks up some pace (which doesen't mean better or even better-looking games, just ones that don't run on PS2 any more). Pretty much all new titles are either coming for the Wii and next gen, too, or are simple party games at which the Wii also excels.
I can see how Sony sees that it has nothing on the Wii and its casual gamer appeal. But to slim down their last-gen-hardware instead of trying to firmly establish the PS3 already and spreading what little resources are left even thinner seems like a bad idea.
I had a roommate that had one, but I bought a few games for it. I've been waiting for a price drop so I could pick one up for myself and play some of my old games.
Plus maybe pick up some other old games that I've never played.
I might get one only so I can play Katamari.
