Impressions: Super Mario Galaxy

I just got my copy of Super Mario Galaxy yesterday but unfortunately haven't had a ton of time to play although I did manage to put in a few hours into it. It was definitely enough to give me a good impression of what the game is like and hopefully will continue to be like as I progress through.
Super Mario Galaxy is a system seller. If you have been on the fence about getting a Wii because of the rumored lack of games, SMG is a reason to hop off that fence and get to the store to purchase one. By far one of the most engaging and exciting Mario games I've played in a long time.
While I enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine, I found the control scheme a little cumbersome and some of the challenge levels to be a little difficult. Galaxy however, is a completely different animal. The control scheme via the Wii remote and nunchuk is fairly intuitive which makes getting around for first timers relatively easy. The new ability to be able to shoot crystals at far away enemies is wonderful, especially for those of you who don't like to get too close for fear of losing life.
The graphics look amazing, some of the best on the Wii so far, with each of the galaxies and levels a treat to play on. The different gravities and walking upside down bits while a bit disconcerting at first, lend a new twist to the game and creates something we've never really seen before in a Mario title.
My only real complaint is that the camera angles can get a bit wonky at times, but never really enough to make you frustrated or want to put the controller down. I would just chalk it up to being a petty annoyance rather than something that really detracts from the gameplay.
So my suggestion is, if you haven't picked up Super Mario Galaxy yet, run to your nearest retailer and snatch it up tout de suite. I promise you won't regret it!

As I said before, I'm loving this game.
Posting from a bus stop on my return trip from Toys R Us, I can tell you that this particular Toys R Us was almost out of copies and there was a very agitated mother behind me clutching an empty display box exclaiming, "I've got a box so I have a copy!" Good luck with that, lady.
I managed to get my copy along with the $25 gift certificate as advertised. No complaints here, but then again I wasn't desperately clinging to an empty display box.

But did you get the cheapy coin? I know I shamelessly need things like that in my life. Anywho, I got my copy, $25 gift card, and silly coin. Work cannot end soon enough!
Completely agreed. Three or four(ish) hours in, the whole thing is like the most fun spacial reasoning exam ever, and it's one of the few games I've played in the platform genre to feel like an evolutionary step above Super Mario 64.
My copy from Amazon still hasn't arrived! *cries*
Daym, guess I have to shell out for Galaxy as well as a ton of other preordered games I've bought. Been on the fence about Galaxy, but virtually every review or impression I got is that this game is a contender for Game of the Year.
I reserved a copy at the local GameCrazy yesterday. I love it, but I am hoping i am not nearing the end. The beginning is rather easy and almost has the sensation that it is being played for me. It's getting harder though, so I think my opinion will change once I get into it more (the Ray Surfing was a bitch).
All in all the ultra 3d nature is a lot of fun. I especially like the addition of the Star Shooter.
I just got it last night and am completely loving the game. I haven't had this much fun with a game in ages - so much to see and explore, lots of goodies to collect, 1ups to be had, and while some parts are disconcerting at first, it was very easy to get immersed in the game.
On a side note, I preordered with GameStop and received a phone call 2 nights ago from Mario (Charles Martinet) telling me all about it and that the game was available.
But then this morning, I had another call on my voicemail from GameStop telling me it was coming out TODAY and "rated mature, so you must be 17 or older". WTF?
