Ys I And II Heading To DS, In Japan

According to Famitsu, Ys I and Ys II are heading to the DS with a brand new paint job from Interchannel-Holon. The story of Ys began in 1987 with the release of Ys I for the PC, followed the next year with Ys II. While only a few titles of the long running series ever made it to the states, the Ys games are very well regarded in Japan.
The remake with sport all new character animations, like Adol swinging a sword instead of just bumping into the enemies from the first iterations. There will be new enemies and maps to explore which is great because the first game is quite short, comprised of a few wandering areas, and one tall dungeon.
I’m assuming most of the game will be played with the directional pads and buttons, since the top screen will be the playing field while the bottom will show player stats. There will be a multiplayer mode where up to four players and duke it out over wireless to defeat the most enemies and gather their orbs.
The last time we saw the games stateside, the first two games were bundled together on the Turbografx CD. They have been torn asunder and are being released as two separate games in the Spring of 2008 in Japan. Will we get them Stateside? Hmm… I don’t think so, but I could be wrong. Niche action RPG fanatics should cross their fingers, because these are some legendary games.
