Video: Interview With White Knight Story Developers

1up sat down with the Level 5’s producer and director of White Knight Story to discuss their upcoming game. Producer Akihiro Hino wanted to make a superhero, giant robot game and finally had the chance with White Knight Story.

They explain the shift in art style from the cell-shaded goodness of Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII, to the smooth CGI-quality of White Knight Story. The developers optimized the art style to fit the horsepower of the system. With greater processing power, they were able to create a higher level of detail.

The single button combat was implemented to make the game more approachable. There are open slots on the controller to assign different attacks to customize the action to the player’s liking.

Check it out, the game seems to be shaping up nicely. With the quality of their previous productions, this one should be a knockout. Expect it to be released in the States sometime next year.

To be honest, I'm disappointed with what I've seen of White Knight Story so far, especially considering how incredible (to me, at least) Dragon Quest 8 and Rogue Galaxy were.

In a video I saw on IGN, the AI of the non-player characters in battle was dumb... they mostly stood around and watched while the main character did all the fighting. Another thing was that the physics didn't match the realism of the world - I saw an enemy being attacked and thrown into the air on a bridge, but instead of being thrown back off the bridge he just hit an invisible wall and repeatedly got knocked up against it. It was so unrealistic that it seemed jarring against the style of the game... They have all this power to work with, but if the physics and AI don't match the graphics, then all we've gained from this generation is a graphical update. The Wii is at least getting developers to think in new ways, despite its less advanced technical power.

That said, it's in development, and these things may improve. I don't want to pre-judge a game that might turn out to be really good. If it is good, it might be a contributing factor to a future Playstation 3 purchase, but right now, it's not telling me it's the killer app that I need to buy a Playstation 3 for.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
