Indie Hotness: Within A Deep Forest
As I was looking around the Indie Games site today, I ran across a familiar friend, Knytt Stories. So I followed the link to the official site for the game to look for some more user submitted levels. Knytt and Knytt Stories are fantastic in their own respect, but I had played them both. Then I downloaded Nifflas' first title, Within a Deep Forest and began kicking myself for not playing this earlier.
Within a Deep Forest laid out the minimalist visual style, with attention to pixel sized detail, that is Nifflas' trademark. In it, you play a bouncing ball in a platforming adventure. For anyone who has played the Knytt series, the game will instantly make sense, since it is set up very similarly. While Knytt relied heavily on exploration, Within a Deep Forest is a very challenging platformer with exploration elements. Throughout the game, you search for creatures to give you more balls to play with. You can transform into a different ball at each checkpoint. Every ball has different properties, like bouncing height, speed, or fragility.
To control the ball, you use the directional buttons to move it along. Press the 'S' button to jump, and the 'A' button will give you more control over the ball by making it bounce less. Holding down the 'S' button will make the ball jump higher. Each ball handles jumping very differently, and you will have to master all of the balls to make any progress in the game.
The art direction is impeccable, and the music suits the mood beautifully. Check out this title for a free download at Nifflas' site, and send him a few bucks with the donation button if you really dig his work.

Within a deep forest is great.
But HARD.
The last level kicks my ass.
