Bionic Commando Makes A Comeback

The original Bionic Commando for the NES was a welcome change to the standard side-scrolling action game with the omission of a jump button which was replaced by a grappling hook. It was a unique mechanic that made the game stand out, and many regard Bionic Commando as one of the best of the system.
After a long silence the franchise has been reborn. Coming to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, Bionic Commando will feature the same grappling system seen many years ago. The hook will not only be used for navigating the levels, but taking out enemies at close range and flinging objects around a level.
From GameSpot’s description of the story:
After serving his country honorably in conflict with the Imperials, technologically enhanced agent Nathan Spencer is framed for a number of crimes by his superiors and sentenced for execution. Fate intervenes, as an experimental terrorist weapon is detonated in Ascension City on the day Spencer is to be executed. With the city in ruins and Spencer uniquely equipped to handle the many skyscrapers, monorails, and suspended roadways, the government reluctantly turns to its imprisoned bionic commando for help.
There are some high expectations surrounding the Bionic Commando brand. Capcom has to deliver a highly polished product to necessitate a comeback. They have gathered an international production group to work on the game with an American producer, Japanese creative advisor and Swedish studio GRIN.
I’m interested to see what this old dog can do. Anybody else excited to see a return of Bionic Commando? It’s been nearly 20 years since the original NES game, so he might be a bit dusty.

Dude, capcom TOTALLY delivers most of the time. I remember being completely shocked with Dead Rising on multiple levels, mostly graphics, gameplay, and originality and that was an original franchise. Capcom is one of my top favorite developers of all time simply because they constantly deliver, and when they don't, their products tend to be better than a lot of teams best work. Here's to hoping!
NOWAYDUDE!
My friends and I were obsessed with the original when I was little. Such an simple but awesomely fun concept. I just hope it translates well to 3D and has more of a hook (pun!) than "Action game... WITH A GRAPPLING HOOK!" Since, if I'm not mistaken (and I'm not) there are and have been plenty of games with grappling hooks since then.
Now a Wii version, that would hook me.
Who the hell is Nathan Spencer? The last Bionic Commando I cared about was named Super Joe...
Sorry, but it's a bit hard for me to get excited these days when a classic makes the jump to 3-D since most of the time they everything screw up. Rygar on PS2 anyone?
Rygar on the PS2 was a great game with a good enough story and fun gameplay.
And it also did the whole chain weapon long before God of War and Heavenly Sword came along.
Talk about a missed opportunity! This series would work so intuitively on Wii and has the likelihood of being nothing more than a snow-less version of Lost Planet on the 360.
I'm a huge BC fan and to see the game without the Badds, Super Joe or Rad Spencer was expected but sad. What I didn't expect was the completely bland visuals. Next-gen gray makes this wonderfully unique series into "just another third person action game" territory faster than you can say "bloom effect".
I really want to be excited about this. BC was one of my favorite NES games and where else are you going to see the reanimated head of Hitler/Master D 'splode? From the story to the art direction to the confusingly poor choice of having no Wii version, I think one forum poster summed it up best when they gave the game a new name...
Bionic Commando: Streetwise
Make me care about this Capcom, because my die-hard fan first impression of the game is not a good one.
