TGS 07: Quick & Dirty With Dark Sector
I didn't get a chance to play Dark Sector at E3, but I loved the demonstration (and the producer) I saw there, so I was glad to get my mitts on the game today on the floor of TGS, where Dark Sector has a strong presence with its own booth and kiosks at the Xbox 360 pavilion.
The build seemed to be the same incomplete-but-gorgeous thing I'd seen earlier, with only partially functional controls and a top-heavy balance that made the game quite a bit too hard to properly appreciate in a short amount of time - but that's the sort of stuff developer Digital Extremes will tighten up and balance (the difficulty slider wasn't even enabled yet, so I'm not kvetching) before Dark Sector's early 2008 release.
As the first next-gen game revealed back in 2004 when the 360 was still "Xbox 2," Dark Sector has something to prove, and the mix of Gears-inspired duck-and-cover gunplay and The Darkness-esque supernatural glaive fighting and puzzle-solving shows heaps of potential and more than enough eye candy. I was hoping to be able to bring a bit more news home about the game, but I hope nevertheless that D3 gives Digital Extremes all the time it needs to tweak this sexy shooter to perfection.
