TGS 07: Hands-On With No More Heroes

I know what you're thinking. "Tiny," you're thinking, "I'd love a great new swordplay action game for my Wii, but I'd like it to not suck. Also, I want it to be subversive and cooler than the coolest cool. And scratch that - can I wield a fluorescent light bulb instead of a sword?" And I'd have to say, gamer, that you've got your finger on the pulse of gaming...well...I'd say something about your finger.

Killer7 creator Goichi Suda is freaking awesome. His upcoming Wii action-slasher, No More Heroes, first surfaced at GDC during a presentation by Suda-san called "Punk's Not Dead." And how. With streetwise cell-shaded graphics and a retro-blocky HUD (your life meter is a Space Invaders-style block heart) and a "beam katana" that looks just like a big long fluorescent bulb, No More Heroes is to the Wii what Johnny Rotten is to Fisher-Price: f*ckin' awesome.

You recharge your sword by jacking off with two hands. If that don't get ya past the jump, I'm just not trying...

Seriously. Hero Protagonist Travis Touchdown, of Santa Destroy, California, has an energy weapon that he recharges by spreading his legs and pumping it up and down. It's not subtle, and I'm not exaggerating. And since this is a Wii game, not only will you use the Wiimote to execute directional killing moves rendered in awesome blocky pixelized flames, but...you guessed it...you'll be miming churning your baby batter right there in your living room.

Developer Suda 51 and the insane genius that is Goichi Suda have put together an extremely easy-to-play, totally hot game. It's the most grownup thing I've seen on the Wii, and it's more fun than a barrel of bearcubs. Combining sweet swordplay with wicked wrestling moves, Travis tears through his enemies in a visual feast so rad that I've adopted a whole pseudo-hipster writing style just to cope, dig?

Ubisoft will be bringing the shizz to North America one day. I will be playing it until my eyes are giant spinning hypno discs. See you in Santa Destroy. Yo.

So what exactly are you all so excited about with regards to this game? The graphics look unimpressive, the animation was very choppy, the enemies ran around mindlessly, and the camera was crap, getting caught up in a corner on the ceiling and behind various pieces of the environment. I was looking forward to this before but after seeing the actual gameplay, I must say that I'm not impressed.
