Video: One Piece Gear Spirit DS Commercial
Here's some obscure gaming news! Japanese manga hit One Piece just reached it's ten year anniversary, and in celebration this year has been full of special releases, games, schwag (I spent over $50 on a popup book) and even an amusement "beach house" with a replica of the StrawHat Pirates' ship.
And the games haven't been too bad either. One Piece Unlimited Adventure came out on the Wii just a few months ago to good reviews and now the DS game is upon us: Gear Spirit. Main character Monkey D. Luffy's special super attacks are called "gears," which is where the name comes from. The graphics are really impressive for the DS and the game has full voiceover so you would expect it to be a traditional fighting game, but it's actually card based. Being a huge One Piece fan, I'm practically drooling at the sight of Luffy's giant fist laying the smack down and the funny little conversation between Luffy and one of his new crewmates. That's right, I am this nerdy.
Don't get too excited now--most likely this game won't be coming to the US anytime soon, just like Unlimited Adventure, which is particularly painful when every single Naruto or Bleach game comes stateside in a matter of minutes. Isn't there any love for pirate rubberboy lovers anymore?

Well just remember one small piece of good news, Pirate Prince. The DS isn't region specific, so you can play it in Japanese, which is better than nothing, right?
i forget, is the wii region specific?
Yes, the Wii is region specific.
anywho, sadly enough One Piece isn't as popular as those series. Moreover, issues with licensing at the moment has prevented further release of any games. But with Funi now holding the rights to OP, these games may come out faster than you think.
But I'm curious - are the cards a big focus point in the game, or is it more like a side thing advertising the OP card game? XD
