Quakecon 2007: id annouces new franchise RAGE
I've been hanging around Quakecon for two days now and finally something interesting happened, well, aside from me handing out deordorant to random smelly gamers. In in combination press conference/keynote address, id CEO Todd Hollingshead and id co-founder John Carmack unveiled the title of their next franchise--RAGE. If you saw the teaser footage from Apple's WWDC, you've actually seen the game, though at the time it was merely pitched as a technology demo. RAGE is a post-apolcalyptic Road Warrior style game, heavy on driving and adventure elements. Utilising id's Tech 5 new engine that enables silmultaneous platform development on OS X, PC, xbox 360 and PS3, Carmack promises a significantly less dark game, with "sunny outside environments" but with id's special little flair we've all come to love.
The project is being drivin by id veteran Tim Willits. Already in development for two years, and over 20 million spent already, both Hollingshead and Carmack are very enthusiastic and say it is a radical departure from id's usual business model and a "significant risk" but they both believe strongly in the project. At least two more years of development remain, and the final game will occupy 2 crammed DVDs or one Blu-ray disk.
Tech 5 allows for an innovative new way of doing development, with artists able to change surfaces and produce beautiful art with no impact on programmers and no source control needed.
Carmack alse revealed that elements of Tech 5 have made its way into Enemy Territory: Quake Wars in the form of mega-textures. ET: Quake Wars now has a release date of October 2, 2007.

Nice, uh, cut scenes. About as nice as Duke Nukem Forever's seemed when they came out 8 years ago.
I'll pay more attention when I see some gameplay videos.
Um, that's live footage. Not pre-rendered.
Yeah, but they're still cut scenes, not gameplay.
