Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Preview On Wii Shop Channel

mp3c.jpg

Our frequent guest writer (and early riser) Wootini sent me a hot news flash this morning about the Metroid Prime 3: Corruption preview which has just mysteriously appeared on the Wii shop channel. Over to you Wootini...

by: Wootini
I hadn't seen my Wii light up in ages, and was slightly disappointed the other day to find out it was just a system update. (Thanks, but the temperature would be better to display in the menu... I can tell it's cloudy by looking out my window.) So imagine my surprise to wake up this morning and find it lit again.

This time, it was to announce a new channel in the WiiWare section of the store that you could download to preview the upcoming Metroid Prime3: Corruption. It's a small download, and barely takes any time at all. And then you find out why. It contains two videos, one trailer and one gameplay scene, but the "buffering" caption before they play has me wondering if they're actually streaming them. The video quality was low enough they may very well be. Still, the videos make the game look pretty awesome, with Samus kicking ass and not even bothering to take names. And there's two more that are grayed out, supposedly available on August 13. (Which is also coincidentally when the original NES Metroid hits the Virtual Console. Oh, and Super Metroid will be available on the 20th. It's a "Month Of Metroid" as the Wii Shop calls it!)

There's not much more to this preview, aside from a weird "painting" activity where you basically hold down A and wipe the remote across the screen to uncover an illustration of Samus looking badass. Of course, if you're lazy, you can just click the button that says "reveal" and save yourself the trouble.

While a couple fuzzy videos and an odd "activity" aren't much to write home about, this looks like a step in the right direction for Nintendo, using their Wii Shop channel in a similar fashion to Xbox Live Marketplace. They've got a long, long way to go before getting to Microsoft's level, but hey, it's a start. And holding back on a couple videos will probably actually make me activate that channel again in a couple weeks to see what they look like. Now, if we could just convince Nintendo somehow to actually offer up playable demos!

i really need to get back on my Wii. So many things have been popping up that i've been missing. This Metroid video preview is the last straw. If i'm gonna get cool videos and the like, i really need to be checking on my Wii on a daily basis.
Thanks for the update!

I hopped on my Wii this morning the instant I saw it glowing. I liked the little interface and the uncoverable picture. However, the streaming videos could have been 'cleaner'. This game will be scads of fun.

Actually, I think on the bottom two videos it says 8/13/07, three days from now, so apparently that's when they'll be revelaed! Hooray!

This is more like it! Glad to see Nintendo giving the Wii crowd some content. They need to keep up with things like this.

And here IGN.com was complaining that Nintendo is not promoting Metriod 3 enough since it has great potential as a killer app and also can be used as software to showcase the Wii's appeal to hardcore gamers.

Granted, there is still plenty more Nintendo can do (commercials, more demos) but least this is something.

Where is this??!! Do you have to be on WiiConnect24 before this happens? I can't find it anywhere - or does the UK not get it yet?

MME, the details were in a Wii-mail sent out by Nintendo delivered early Friday morning (or sometime after I went to bed Thursday night). You can find it in the Wii Ware section of the Shop. However, I don't know if it's available in the UK. Since you do have a different shop than us. And if you didn't get a Wii-mail like we did, I'd have to wager that's a big "no" for you guys. Why can't it be Metroid Month in the UK, too? That doesn't seem fair!
