Comic Con 07: Folklore Hands-On
It's funny, at both E3 and Comic Con, Game Republic's PS3 exclusive fantasy adventure title, Folklore, was nearly universally overlooked - each time I saw it available for demo, nobody was playing it. Which is weird, because it's a gorgeous-looking game with a baroque fantasy feel to it and a great pedigree in the name of Shin Megami Tensei creator Yoshiki Okamoto.
I played it, loved it, and even I forgot about it. Time to correct that mistake! Folklore, which has been called many names during its development (Monster Kingdom, Unknown Realms and FolksSoul), is a jaw-droppingly beautiful dark fantasy tale built specifically to show off the prowess of the PS3. It tells the tale of two strangers, Keats and Ellen, who discover a bucolic village that lives on the border of the world of dreams. Beyond the veil of reality, Keats and Ellen visit seven Netherworlds, each with their own eerie theme such as the ruined Undersea City and the Borges-esque maze of the Endless Corridor.
With a cast of over 100, you'll encounter many a friend and foe as you battle monsters, "yank" their powers from their corpses via a simple twist-it-toward-your-chest motion via the SIXAXIS (one of the few SIXAXIS implementations I found intuitive...most of them have frustrated me, but this felt a bit like fishing and wasn't off-putting at all). You'll use those stolen powers to attack, mapping them to the four face buttons and using them strategically in an expanding arsenal of magical summons-style fighting to subdue your foes - for instance, one attack summoned a massive gryphon-type critter for a quick but brutal frontal assault.
Despite a rather visually ornate battle system, the controls are simple and the action happens in real-time - combining jaw-dropping visuals with a very playable scheme. Think Jade Empire meets Fable meets Kameo. Check it out!

Dude. I want this one so bad I created a Japanese account on my PS3 so I could download the demo last month.
Looks totally rad. I can't wait for this one!
I have been following this game for quite some time now. I, too, got the demo from the Japanese PSN store, and I'm liking the gameplay a lot. I also agree with you on the sixaxis controls. They actually feel "right" in this game. It's fun "ripping" the souls out of your foes! Muahaha!
