What Would Make You Buy a PS3?

ps3-grill.jpg

2old2play raises an interesting question: what would it take for the gamers who don't have a PS3 yet to go out and buy one? We got a hundred-dollar price-drop, and at E3, Sony announced a few tasty exclusives they hope to help push console sales. Clearly in the past, Blu-ray wasn't enough of a selling point: now that there's a lower price and more quality titles on the horizon, what more do you need from Sony to lay down your hard-earned dollars down for a PS3?

For me, I'm simply not interested at this point in time. While I'm by no means a Sony hater (I'll always cherish my PS2), I bought my 360 a few months before the PS3 and Wii launched, and laying down that $600 for it (tax, the deluxe set, a second controller, a GAME) was already a strain on my bank account. So my first excuse was strictly a money issue; I was waiting for a price drop. Then the Wii came out, and that was a quick $250 or so there. But as time went on, more and more games were coming out for the 360 that kept me satisfied and fewer of those were exclusive to the PS3. Also, over time, it became really evident that the online interface and community is a lot better on Xbox Live than the PlayStation Network.

So are games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Haze, Killzone 2 and other PS3 exclusives enough for you to get a PS3 anytime soon? What more do you want to make it worth buying? How cheap does it have to be? While there are certainly some enticing titles (and Home looks kinda fun), I could always play the PS3 at a friend's house (Tiny Dancer *cough cough*) or at work and just wait until Sony makes me an offer I can't refuse. And if Sony's plans for PS3 are along the same lines as what they did for the barely-changed PSP, then I'll be waiting quite a while...

Ratchet and Clank looks quite exciting. 3 or 4 more quality titles and I'll think about it because until the gamesare in place I'm not interested at any price above £50 - and thats includin Ratchet & Clank!

The best console I ever owned was my PS1, I also have a PS2, so again not a Sony hater. But at the moment I have to be realistic, the 360 dominates - Saints Row, Xbox Live, Geometry Wars, Project Gotham, Gears, the list goes on. Especially with Halo aroudn the corner. Lets just say unlike a lot of my puchases I don't regret getting my 360.

Tbh the few titles that are pure sony I have no interesting - I think Metal Gear is pretty boring, its just not my kind of game, same goes for Splinter Cell types.

The only way I will buy a PS3 is if yet another price drop comes, and if I find out that KH3 [or whatever the next title by Disney/Square Enix that is involving Kingdom Hearts] will be a PS3 exclusive.

Those are the conditions. YOU HEAR THAT SONY!!! Do that, and another PS3 will be sold.

I've had my PS3 since march :-) I didn't buy a 360 because I knew the PS3 was coming and have not regretted it once second. I adore my PS3 and while things were slow at first must-have titles are pouring in as we near xmas. Viva Sony! :-D

I'm not an MS hater, there's just nothing that makes me want a 360 yet. Once Bioshock, Fable II, Mass Effect & Lost Odyssey are released I'll have a reason to think about it. Plus it would help if they resolved the whole red ring of death thing, and an extended warranty is NOT a resolution.

Next to SF2, Tekken is my favorite fighting series. I really like some other franchises , owned a PS1 and now have a PS2 but there is absolutely *nothing* that would make me buy a PS3 now. With at least 3 Generations of great consoles before the current "next gen" and thousands of games to chose from, I see absolutely no reason to get the PS3. I have all the next gen gaming I could want from my 360, might buy a Wii first and foremost because it also is GC bc.

If in a few years the price drops to 200 bucks used *and* there is a decent back catalogue of exclusives to snatch on a budget, I just might consider it. For now, it has exactly zero appeal to me.

I AM SO GAY FOR THE PS3

Not that I'm a fanboy or anything, but paying 100 dollars extra for new technology doesn't sound too bad to me. I haven't heard it get the red ring of death, so i imagine it'll not break down or overheat like all of my friends' xbox 360s

That plus solid snake is a gfilp, a grandfather i'd like to phedge

Before I get a PS3, I'd have to have a TV that can take advantage of all that vaunted technology it has under the hood. A 32' CRT just makes it seem like a complete waste of money.

As for those exclusives, they have to actually be released. Right now only two games have been announced for that system has me excited, Final Fantasy XIII & White Knight Story. The former won't be out for probably another year at least and the latter hasn't even been confirmed for US release. For me to by a PS3, there need to be more RPG exclusives (Kingdom Hearts, possibly a Chrono Trigger?) and they need to actually be released. I am not going to buy a $600 system just on promises, which has been pretty much the only thing Sony's been giving us. When I see quality titles I can't get on other systems actually on store shelves, then I will consider getting one. I imagine by then the price will have dropped substantially as well.

Personally I've found the PS3 to be a much better deal overall than the "cheaper" 360 for a number of reasons. It's not only quieter and infinitely more reliable, it's an effing Blu-ray player. While games have been slow coming out (as they were in the beginning for the 360 as well), almost everything available on the 360 is also available on the PS3... Oblivion, The Darkness, F.E.A.R are all great on the PS3, not to mention exclusives like Motorstorm, Ridge Racer, soon-to-be-released Lair... while the best is yet to come, I don't feel like there's "nothing to play" on the PS3.

I too have a 360, but if the two were put in front of me today with their current price tags, and knowing what I know now, I would pick the PS3 in an instant.

Wootini said:

What would make me buy a PS3? Well, games. Games I can't get anywhere else that I simply HAVE TO PLAY. And right now, there just aren't any. At least, not for me. I've never been a big Metal Gear fan, and Lair and Heavenly Sword don't look that interesting to me. With the cost of game production, 3rd parties would be crazy to offer up exclusives. So until Sony starts cranking out the good games (which I have no doubt that they will... eventually), I'll have plenty to keep myself busy on the Wii and 360.

GaymerFox said:

Speaking as a big PS2 fan, its just too much money for no good reason.

I bought my Wii the day it launched so I could play Zelda, and it was awesome. The PS3, however, had no real appeal. I think it still doesn't.

They need good exclusive games. I love my PS2 for games like FFX, Silent Hill 2/3 (not currently exclusive), and Kingdom Hearts.

When Sony actually HAS Metal Gear 4, Resident Evil 5, FFXIII out for sale, MAYBE I will consider it.

IF those games all turn out to be on XBOX 360, then I might just convert to a 360 fan. 360 actually has some exclusive games that I would like to play (and they had many of them very soon after launch).

Still even with all that, a PS3 is just so damn expensive.

arkadin said:

another price drop and final fantasy 13. metal gear solid won't hurt either. the blu-ray player? so what? unless the criterion collection moves over to blu-ray (which, if they do it at all, it won't be any time soon), i just don't see the appeal.

tiny dancer said:

Criterion on Blu-ray? Come now Arkadin, do we really want to see Little Edie with 1080 lines of crumbling bathos?

Well, yes, I suppose we do. But how much will they charge for THAT, I ask you?

Bluebreaker said:

Clearly from most of the comments 500-600 is just simply too much for the average gamer. I won't ever get an Microsoft system because a) Online is simply not that big of deal for me b) The RROD is a significant deal breaker even with warranty. I mean come on, a warranty is supposed to a safeguard not an automatic response. MS does have very intresting games this and next year though and they are FINALLY getting on the RPG bandwagon!! Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata are quite intriguing.

But I guess I'm just waiting for the right time for my finances to take the PS3 plunge. As far as I'm concerned Oblivion GOTY version is a PS3 system seller for me.

I bought a Wii the first chance I could get & I just now bought a PS2.
I don't see myself picking up a PS3 until at least the next next generations come out, if I ever do. I can't afford the console or the price of games.
My roomie at college is bringing his 360 so I don't see any need to pick that system up. Besides, most of the games that come out for the 360 eventually find their way onto the PC and my PC is more than capable of playing the new games.

MME said:

There's more chance of me picking up a PS2 than a PS3. I dont see the point of spending 500 quid (in the UK with NO price drop in site) on a game console - my days of having the latest tech is long gone.

There are more games on the XBox360 that I think are worth playing at the moment - but the failure rate and the emminent release of the Elite version has held me back for now.

Shin Gallon said:

It's mostly the price keeping me from owning one. There are a few games for it now I want, and more on the way (namely MGS4 and the new Ratchet and Clank, which looks amazing), but at the moment I simply can't afford to toss 5-6 hundred on a game system, especially when I have so many games for systems I already own that I've not beat yet/am still playing and enjoying.
I know I'll own one eventually, the Blu-Ray playback and some system-selling exclusives mean I'll HAVE to. Just...not yet.

Gwan said:

It's not so much titles or money that's keeping me from purchasing a PS3, it's me waiting for a more.. stable product. I do not mean that in a way that suggests that many PS3's are experiencing hardware failures or that the technology is not up to snuff, but in a way that suggests that Sony needs to decide exactly -what- is coming in the box. Is 60GB gone forever? Is the 80GB here to stay? When is ruble coming with the packaged controller? Is Sony going to suddenly decide to add more features in attempt to try to coax more people to purchase the PS3? Will... the price drop not matter once the 60GB PS3 is gone?

I'd love some more quality titles to come to the PS3, and a cheaper product would be lovely (I won't be in a position that allows me to drop $500-$600 on a console, and more still on games, for quite some time as it is), but for now I just want to be sure as to what I'll be getting and what I'll be missing out of the box.

Sony seems to be trying to make their product more appealing, and I'm waiting to see how appealing they're willing to make it.

raindog said:

What would make me buy a PS3? The same two things that made me buy a PS2.

1. An exclusive title that's genuinely unique and fun, like Katamari Damacy was. (I'd have been sorely tempted by Okami, but let's face it, it's Zelda with a paintbrush.)

2. A $129 price tag.

I'd be willing to adjust a little bit for inflation, but not for bad business models.

I just bought a PS3 today online. The only reason being is I like to play PS2 games. With the Emotion Engine still intact on the "price cut" model, I felt I might as well get one while it's still available. I kept getting the nagging feeling that an EE-less model would be horrible and if I waited too long they would no longer be available. Also I was drunk.

I'll get a 360 once the red ring bull mess is reduced or at the very least lessened to a great extent. There are more games I want for the 360 but I don't want a busted ass console. I guess I'd rather take an overpriced gaming machine with no games I want to play (right now) over one that's prone to breaking... a lot.

Honestly, I'm rather picky about the PS3 due to all the problems with the price, and the HDTV, and the cables... but if they had this stuff, I would buy it. It would have to be exclusive, though...

--A Final Fantasy VII remake. This has probably been said a million times, but still, it deserves its remake now that the first six games have been made fifty times apiece.

--Suikoden VI. I'm a big fan of the series.

--Final Fantasy XIII games.

--Some sort of Tales of game, but the new ones announced aren't PS3, so that's probably nothing for me to worry about.

I tell you why I bought a ps3 a week ago...

because they were removing *real* hardware backwards compatibility. As the owner of a large ps2 library and witness to the 360 craptastic software emulated BC, this is a huge selling point. It also helped that I had over $100 in best buy reward zone stuff that brough the system down to a nice >$400 price tag.

In all honesty though, there is little to play. I've played Ninja Gaiden on xBox, I have no interest Resistance, and everything else out on the platform can be had for my 360 with better online and achievements. I'm in love with Super Stardust, Calling all Cars is neat, and I'm tempted by fl0w, but these experiences can't hold up a system with a $499 price tag. I know Lair, Heavenly Swoard, R&C, and others down the pipeline, but most of the biggest hitters are a year away or clones or something i've played before (I'm looking at you Goddess of War), not like the descent stock of 360 game that can be had now.

Right now my ps3 is used solely as a Okami/Super Stardust machine. Maybe I'll try a few of the free Betaray discs that I mailed in for before flopping them on ebay, but... I don't see myself buying any retail ps3 games for a long time.

@raindog: Okami *is* Zelda with a paint brush, but it "out-Zeldas" many of the most recent installments. It's longer, tighter, emotionally stronger, and more beautiful... and I say this as a card carrying member of the Nintendo Defense Force. Okami should not be missed for anything.

Nerdgaymer said:

I will echo what alot of other people have been saying; the price drop is nice but not enough and Final Fantasy 13. I jumped ship from Nintendo to follow the franchise and I would do it again. I would be more likely to replace my sick PS2 at the moment, than buy a PS3.

With that said none of the next gen consoles thrill me. The new x-box sounds like it explodes into a red ring of doom if you look at it wrong, the PS3 is too pricey, and even though the Wii is probably the most innovative/well marketted of the three to me it seems like a toy and not a console (sort of like the tallest midget, no offence to midgets).

raindog said:

Game-boi, I think Okami is one of the finest games ever made, probably a better game than Twilight Princess and criminally neglected by, well, everyone. It'll go down in history like NiGHTS, with a small but fierce cadre of fans crying out for a sequel and trying to get other people to play it so they'll be converted as well. Except Okami is an infinitely better game than NiGHTS ever dreamed of being, no pun intended.

But in the above post, I was talking about games that are fun AND totally unique at the time of their release, games that are so different than what I'm able to play that I can't resist shelling out to buy the console just to play that one game, and so Okami didn't pass muster. Zelda is close enough, all four of the 3D versions (well, 3 at the time), so I didn't need a PS2, just as Halo 1..n doesn't pass muster on the Xbox or 360.

Since I had already bought one for Katamari, though, Okami FTW.

Loco Roco almost did it for the PSP, but not quite. (That, and I still kinda hope they release it for the PS2, since they're claiming to support their consoles for 10 years and not every game can be God of War 2.)

So that's why I'm thinking it's gonna take something other than a FPS or RPG or Zelda-style adventure to make me plop down my $129 for a PS3 in 5 or 6 years. It's gonna take something really off-kilter, probably Japanese, and initially dismissed as "kiddie" by the 3 remaining hardcore gamers until they actually play it, much like Katamari or Loco Roco.

I guess I should have presented that as two related variables, because while Katamari was unique and fun enough to make me shell out $129, who knows, something could come along that raises that threshold to $199 or more. It just isn't anything that they've announced to date for the PS3, not even Second Home or Little Sims Planet.

"The only reason I'd buy one is if they dropped the price to $99 and gave me a free pair of kitty heels, since I am a gay or if the PS3 grew a penis...I would then buy it because I am a gay, you see."

Impoverished gays who want everything for free make me wretch, in a very homosexual way in deed! As walking gay stereotypes your monthly earnings are only used for condoms, poppers, lube and rent money, right? So what do you do with the rest?

And Second Home and Little Sims Planet? That's so fucking precious. They say homosexuals are witty but really, where do you come up with these gems? Jesus, I wish you'd get your own television sitcom, just so that I could never watch it when it intially airs but then buy the complete season on DVD and bemoan random strangers about it's ill-fated cancellation. Really, you're that hee-larious.
