Video: Tales of Innocence DS
The first official trailer of Namco Bandai's new DS "Tales" game is here: Tales of Innocence! I've long been a fan of the storylines of "Tales" games, but had issue with the battle system. I much prefer my RPGs to be turn based, and not melee based--I always end up favoring the sword carrying character, merely because its just more practical in this type of battle system. Not being able to control all of the characters, and relying on questionable AI is also anathema to me. So although I'm fond of the Tales games, I often have reservations.
Tales of Innocence, due out in Japan at the end of the year, looks like a gem of an RPG for the DS. Although parts of it look significantly dated (the almost laughable shots of landscape, for instance), I am still impressed by the 3D graphics that the DS is capable of. Towns look detailed and full of life without being boring and symmetrical, and characters have unique and recognizable physiognomies. They might be a little more simplified than we're used to from Square-Enix style RPGs, but the Tales tradition is to reveal complex and charismatic characters through the storyline rather than through character design.
Although I couldn't figure out a thing about the storyline except the little gun totin' redhead has some attitude, I'm excitied to add this game to my growing DS RPG collection. With the shiny next gen systems getting all the theatrical platformers and mind-boggling first person shooters, it seems like the PSP and DS are becoming the new systems for RPGs. And I'm ok with that. I think.

Not to state the obvious but "Tales" is quite popular with people who hate "turned based" anything. I think it's more fun with more than one person playing. They've been REAL selective about what gets released in the States and what doesn't though. What's up with that?
