The First Images of Disgaea 3!

I think we can all agree on this: Disgaea is like no other SRPG out there. A combination of slapstick, old school japanese strategy gaming and cutesy demon-based anime, Disgaea captured my heart almost immediately when it was released back in 2003. I was equally excited to play the sequel, and pleased to find that although the mythos and idea held a little less charm for me, the gameplay had been fine tuned and reoriented in a very successful manner. The franchise was secure in my eyes, and Nippon Ichi still gods.
And now, the first two images for the upcoming Disgaea 3... for Playstation 3. Take a good long look at the image to your right, as well as the other one at the jump below. Does that look like PS3 graphics to you? Now, I'm not a graphics stickler--as long as the aesthetic is cohesive and they make it work, I'm all for lo-fi. But I have to admit these screenshots worry me. Surely this is a mistake and it's coming out for PSP. Although the polygons look much better, with cleaner lines and more detail, the sprites look exactly the same: jaggy and distorted. With all that memory, and the beauty that I've seen done with 2D sprites from Vanillaware with their beautiful Odin Sphere, this is just no longer acceptable on a next gen title.
Not that I'm giving up. Definitely keeping my eyes and ears open for this one, and hope that my fears are unfounded.

GODDAMNIT!
People need to stop bitching about this game already. Bad reviewer! You should know better than to just focus on graphics... what about the gameplay? Yeesh.
Really. Especially for NiS. Have you seen their other games? They aren't ugly, but they are more concerned with having a bajillion different weapons and moves for the 3 or 4 iterations of 20 playable characters, and then the multiple endings that unlock special characters. Graphics are nice and all, but NiS is all about other stuff. Odin Sphere was a definite anomaly in their catalogue of games.
So long Disgaea! You were kind of fun but I'm not paying 600$ for you.
Cool announcement considering that I'm just getting back into Disgaea 1 again!
It's refreshing that SOMEONE is finally making the jump to PS3. Realistically if all of the developers did it at the same time, PS3 would magically have the base library it needs to get rolling, and we wouldn't mind paying $600 for it, which would encourage more developers to develop for it due to it's large user-base and and... the ball keeps rolling from there. If only things like this happened so quickly... I think this is a brave move for NiS.
Don't get me wrong, I won't buy it either. But if all of my favorite series' decide to finally make the jump to PS3, I'll be forced to.
I'll still get Disgaea Portable though. :)
The Disgaea games have been my favorite grid-bases "tactics"-style NiS/Atlus/etc games, and they're definitely not about the graphics. They're about the prinnies, right?
But I'm gonna have to back my boy the Pirate Prince up here - the graphics absolutely do NOT need to be supermegawow, but a little tidying up for the PS3's sweet 1080p just seems like a good idea from both a design and a marketing appeal perspective.
But having seen what the PS3 can do to older graphics, I feel pretty hopeful that the visual production values will keep pace with the times. It isn't a terrible thing to ask for, after all. Crisp sprites shouldn't ruin anyone's gameplay experience, even if it isn't "about" the graphics.
Also, prinnies.
