Ocarina of Time Named Top Game

U.K. based Edge magazine has compiled their list of the 100 best games based on reader votes, the opinions of industry insiders and the deliberations of the Edge staff themselves. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time took top honors as the best game ever followed by several other Nintendo titles in the top ten including Super Mario 64, Super Mario World and another Zelda game, A Link to the Past. The magazine hits shelves tomorrow in the U.K. and internationally, shortly thereafter. The top ten titles appear below. What do you think of their picks?
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Resident Evil 4
- Super Mario 64
- Half Life 2
- Super Mario World
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Final Fantasy XII
- Tetris
- Super Metroid

Pretty good list.
I just picked up RE4 for the Wii. Now I understand why people raved about it when it came out for the GC -- what an amazing game. Definitely a top 10 contender.
I'm not sure why Halo is in here though. I guess for the console it was revolutionary, but it terms of FPS, there are much better ones out there.
Pretty good list if you think video games were invented in about 1989.
Halo being on there but Half Life 2 not invalidates this list.
That said, I'd pick Link to the Past or Twilight Princess or Wind Waker as being WAY better than Ocerina of Time.
And FFXII? Don't even get me started. ANY other FF game is better than that.
Wait, HL2 is on there...how did I miss that?
My points about FFXII and OoT still stand, though.
This list of the top 100 games of all time scores very high on my list of worst 100 top 100 lists of all time. Monkey Island #79? Nuff said.
Shin Gallon: As much as I love the series and the game in question, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker owe too much of their core designs to OoT to even be thought of for this list. OoT's design set a precedent for the series and the adventure genre as a whole. Where OoT was revolutionary and years ahead of it's time, TP and WW feel more like the natural evolution of the series from that point.
I think the reason Halo appears on the list is...well...for many people it was the first original FPS for consoles done right. Some might say Goldeneye, but that's nostalgia talking (drab levels, poor characters/story, and most importantly...no duel analogue sticks!) Halo is a well refined game that shattered people preconceptions of how that genre can be experienced on a console.
All in all, I mostly agree with the list. I personally would have replaced SMW with SMB3, placed Tetris higher, and replace FF12 with either Fallout or System Shock 2.
wow. what a weird list.
FFXII instead of FFVII?
Halo? really? no DeusEx, SystemShock2, or even GoldenEye64?
heck, you've got two Marios on there and two Zeldas.
i guess this is what you get when you let readers "contribute". either that or the editors must [s]be on Nintendo's payroll [/s] have a major boner for for the big "N" since 7/10 of those titles highly associated as being Nintendo titles.
FFXII? What magazine was this? High Times?
Christ, that game had zero substance.
