EIEIO 07: Mushroom Men - The Spore Wars

Mushroom_Men---poster-with-.jpg

Mushroom Men has been a member of the Gamecock stable since the beginning. I remember hearing the name, seeing the few pieces of game art and trailer and being instantly intrigued. When we got our Gamecock appointment, I made sure this was one of the games we got to take a look at.

The short video presentation we saw showed the comparison between the concept art and the final character models, a rundown of some of the clever weapons and even a little gameplay (which was in full 3D). The story pits the evil poisonous mushrooms against the gentle non-poisonous in a battle to rule the land. It all looked great and certainly the world of mushrooms is not something we see often in games, giving it an originality that was refreshing compared to a lot of the stuff we saw at E3.

Mushroom Men is still very early in the development stage for both the Wii and the DS and Ryan and Chad from Red Fly Studios were quick to point out that at this point in the creation of the game they weren't particularly looking for press, but were hoping we would keep our eyes on them for the future. And keep our eyes on them we will!

Make the jump to check out a more detailed explanation of the storyline right from Red Fly Studios themselves!

Mushroom Men inhabit the world that goes on while we are looking the other way, in the twilight hours while we sleep, in our peripheral vision. the humans that tower above them go about their business completely unaware of the war raging at their feet.

Overview: After the comet had passed, all the planet's researchers concluded its strange green dust had no effect on the world. none noticed that tiny plants and fungi were acting strangely. Mushrooms, cacti, kudzu and other formerly-normal plants had awoken to full consciousness. Tribes quickly formed among the various mushroom species: the primitive Boletes, the aggressive Amanitas, and the inventive Morels. With nations formed, war inevitably followed.

"Mushroom Men - The Spore Wars" shows gamers the mundane world from the surreal perspective of a three-inch-high Mushroom Man. Unnoticed by humans, a war rages between the spore factions. As a brave Bolete Mushroom Man, players are given the opportunity to wreak havoc by transforming common household trinkets and trash into weapons and tools.

Features:

  • As a character the size of a mushroom, players explore and battle their way through more than 10 lush and spooky levels in an oversized and hostile world.

  • Choose from three different characters on DS or play the heroic misfit on Wii. Experience two different game styles - a fast-paced single-player adventure , or team up with friends in cooperative mode.

  • Fight hideous spiders, deadly praying mantises, lightning fast scorpions, enemy Mushroom Men, and much more!

  • Wipe out your enemies with unique spore-based powers.

  • Construct clever new weapons and tools out of everyday materials.

This is one of the few games I'm actually looking forward to...it somehow reminds me of Grim Fandango a little.
