E3 07: Singstar=Myspace + iTunes?

Haven't you always wanted to sing your favorite songs and dance around like a buffoon, record it and put it on the internet? If the answer is yes, like about a trillion other people who have turned YouTube into the Isle of the Damned, then SingStar is the "game" for you. In this video from Sony's Press Conference at the ubiquitous E3, Phil Harrison, standing around his virtual Home in some kind of Nascar suit and looking decidedly stiff, hands over the reigns to British lady extraordinaire Pauline Bozek to talk about SingStar.

Yes, the name sounds like some sort of magic ability belonging to a Disney princess, but I can see why Sony is pushing the title. Combining myspace-like community aspects that create long term and devoted followers of the game with a store that promises customization through playlist choice and profile development, this could definitely be Sony's cash cow. Add in the need to buy a separate camera to make your own music videos and flip your hair back like Tawny Kitaen, and you can definitely see where this is going.

The interface looks really well done (I almost have a hard time believing it's real and not just for the presentation), but it will be interesting to see further details on how the SingStar online actually pans out. Everyone likes some kind of music on a nearly fanatical level, so it will be interesting to see how one's profile expresses one's tastes and achievements through the game. Just please, don't embarrass yourself by turning into one of those scary internet troll people.

Always loved the presentation and song choice on Singstar. However, I have been avoiding it because I heard that the vocals can't be turned off. I want to truly karaoke, not sing-along. Until they give the option, I'll stick with Karaoke Rev and American Idol.

I firmly believe that SingStar needs more Bjork. And hasn't Sony learned that no one pays attention to their stupid capitalization.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
