E3 07: Microsoft Media Briefing

xboxthingie.jpg

I just got in from the Microsoft E3 Media Briefing and boy is my ass tired! I'm sure you could read into that a myriad of ways, but. the fact of the matter is I sat for an hour and a half on cement cushioned only by a round foamy thing that Microsoft provided for us to allegedly make it more comfortable. But, you're not here to read about my sore ass, so let's get to the meat of the story shall we?

There wasn't any earth shattering news to come from this event, but there was certainly a lot of Microsoft horn blowing and great footage from some of the upcoming games. Peter Moore took the stage and wowed the crowd by demoing Rock Band with some of the employees from Harmonix. I regret to say I didn't recognize the song they were playing, but Peter literally brought the house down by managing to accidentally hit the pause button on his guitar TWICE effectively stopping the song, but it was still pretty damned cool to watch the game in action.

Mr. Moore then went on to tell us how well the 360 is doing in comparison to the competition and some of the numbers were pretty astounding. While they may not be selling as many units as the Wii, the amount of software sold is phenomenal. The we were treated to a compilation video outlining the titles coming out on 360 for the rest of the year and I must say it was quite impressive. Project Gotham Racing 5, Mass Effect, Stranglehold, Guitar Hero 3, Beautiful Katamari, Lost Odyssey, Fatal Inertia, Medal Airborne, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Ace Combat, Assasin's Creed, The Simpsons, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Nascar 08, Eternal Sonata, Bioshock, Crash of the Titans, Orange box, Naruto and Grand Theft Auto VI just to name a few (I would have listed more, but my sausage fingers could only type so fast in the dark). Quite an impressive list for the rest of the year and much to look forward to.

Xbox Live Arcade was discussed next and like the regular game offerings, the list was pretty great. Bomberman Live, Hexic 2, Undertow, War World, Every Extend Extra, Wing Commander Arena, Track and Field, Space Giraffe, Super Puzzle Fighter HD, Tetris Splash, Puzzle Quest. (Again I may have missed some, but there was a lot to take in) Two other olde school titles featured were Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe, both of which are available on XBLA as we speak.

Xbox Live Video marketplace got it's big announcement in the form of a partnership with Disney Studios that will bring many of Disney's animated and live action properties to the service in full HD. many of these titles will also be available as of the writing of this article. And for those of you whoa re readers in Canada and Europe, plans are in the works to bring this content to you as well!

And speaking of Europe, those of you who have been looking forward to the Xbox Elite, it will be available to you beginning August 24th.

Next we moved on to Games for Windows, featuring titles coming top a PC with Vista near you such as Viva Pinata, Gears of War (which Cliffy B himself demoed for us), Crysis, Hellgate London, Thrillville, Age of Empires 3, BioShock, Universe at War, Area 51, World in Conflict, Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Lost Planet, Kane & Lynch, Juiced 2 and Spiderman: Friend or Foe.

The evening was rounded out with some solid demos of Assassin's Creed which looks incredibly beautiful and rather reminded me of a cross between Oblivion and Prince of Persia, and Call of Duty 4, which while it didn't interest me as a game, looked very detailed and worth playing for those of you into that sort of thing.

There were several other things that I'm sure I missed, again, I was just one guy typing in the dark with a sore ass, but I covered the highlights here. There were also a few other announcements that I will be covering in separate articles because I felt they merited their own spots rather than getting lost in the fray of a synopsis, so stay tuned for those. Now I trundle myself off to bed in the hopes that I can get through tomorrow without completely collapsing, but keep checking back with us for our continuing coverage of E3 '07!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
