Disney Wants To Spend More Cash On Game Development

Say what you want about the Walt Disney Company, but they haven't been pissing me off like they used to back in the days when Michael Eisner was in charge. Damn you, Michael Eisner. You and your awful, awful sequels like Cinderella II: The Morning After and Hunchback of Notre Dame II: Quasimodo Gets Some Lovin'. Seriously, we all hated the man when I worked at Disneyland.
But I digress: remember how awful most Disney-based games are? Like that awful FPS title, Atlantis: The Lost Empire? Or the lackluster gameplay in The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge? Yeah, me too. Anyway, guess what? It looks like Disney games are going to have more money thrown into their development, which could hopefully lead to higher-quality titles and, maybe one day, (dare to dream) a new Tron game. We're not talking about some extra change found under the couch, either, we're talking about some major dinero, accoring to the company's chief financial officer:
"We are ramping up our investment in video games…. It is a market where there is real opportunity," Thomas O. Staggs said in London.Part of the Burbank-based entertainment company's strategy centers on making sure that hit products sell strongly across the business, irrespective of whether they start as a film, product or game.
Disney spent about $100 million on video game development last year and will spend $130 million this year.
"Over the next five years or so we are ramping up to about a pace of $350 million per year in video game investment, principally consoles and hand-helds," Staggs said.
More money being put towards games like the Pirates of the Caribbean MMORPG and Spectrobes, eh? I could definitely see myself getting excited about that.

ducktales. o man i loved that game! same with the chip'n'dale rescue rangers game that came out around the same time.
You worked for the mouse? Which department?
*still in the clutches of the land o disney*
I was one of the Canoes cast members.
Apparently he got hit on all the time by moms and their daughters. ;)
I'll give you one guess as to which series started wheting Disney's appetite for video game dollars. Hint: gigantic fucking keys are used as weapons.
Boy of Tommorow: You got your new Tron game a few years ago...Tron 2.0. Sure it wasn't that great, but it wasn't bad either. I'm still waiting for my Black Cauldron game. Wii please?
MuddBstrd: I completely agree. After seeing the fan reaction and turnout, they have to be taking games a little bit more seriously.
Yeah, I want another Tron game. Tron 2.0 was beaten long ago, and I want to return to the digitized world therein for new adventures. And, don't get me wrong, I loved the Black Cauldron, but it's way too obscure for anyone to actually do a game based on the movie... though, a game based on the Lloyd Alexander series... that's a possibility.
