Saints Row 2 Confirmed, Saints Row PS3 Cancelled

Today was an auspicious day for THQ and the Saints Row franchise: first off, the bad news: Saints Row for the PS3 has been canceled. Why won't the PS3 be getting any free-range urban gangbanging action, you ask? Let's let THQ CEO Brian Farrell explain:
"We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year ... We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch."
The "multiplatform" concept also pops up in the second of today's THQ announcements: the confirmation of Saints Row 2 for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Under development at THQ's Volition studio, the game has been in the works for "some time" and can be expected sometime in 2008. There were few details beyond the basics, although Farrell did let drop that the game would "utilize Volition's proprietary open-world engine and deliver an all-new cross-platform gaming experience."
Cross-platform, huh? Does that mean my PS3 buddies and my 360 buddies will be able to work together to bring crime and horror to the world? Cuz that would be nifty.

This is only going to become more and more common. It would be great if you could have cross-platform play, but I don't see Live playing nice with PS3's...
Or by "Cross platform" he might mean Xbox Live playing with Windows Vista Ala Shadowrun. Didn't the multiplayer in Saints Row 1 suck?
