Penny Arcade To Spider-Man 3: You Suck!

Ouch. Ouch. I'm not sure there is any other word to quite describe my reaction to the latest Penny Arcade comic. Normally I don't mention webcomics here on the site, but this strip by Gabe and Tycho was so utterly blunt that I think it bears special notice.
I really wasn't all that amazed by the trailers for Spider-Man 3's console tie-in, but the reviews I've been reading have been mediocre at best to overtly negative, mainly criticizing the developers for being lazy and not really implementing anything new while relying on bland graphics coupled with an irritating camera system. I mean, I guess I shouldn't have been expecting a good game based on a shitty movie (The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay seems to be the exception to that rule), but I didn't expect it to be this bad:
It is our opinion that you could still lead a full, rich life without this game. Caught in some purgatory between console generations, the game we played is quite simply not worthy of a Penny Arcade reader.
Hot damn, I guess that says it all.

Actually, no, they're right, it's really that awful. My roomate bought it yesterday. It looked like it was a ps2 port to the ps3 console. After he played it for 20 minutes or so, the game was so horrible it made the ps3 crash and turn itself off. wow.
yeah, funny comics... shame about the so-called jokes about 'queers' and AIDS.
Am I twisted for liking this game? I have the Xbox360 version. I get a jolly just from swinging through Manhattan, looking for places I've been. The gameplay isn't innovative.. but the 2nd game wasn't bad either. Neither title is stellar, but I don't regret getting it one bit.
It's sad that so many people are disappointed with these games, but I have a hard time placing the majority of the blame on the developers of the various versions of the game.
By "friend of a friend" status I know someone who worked on one version of Spidey3. Since each version of the game is developed by different teams (some at different development houses), each case is a little different with the unique development hooks and catches of each platform. But a common thread between all of them is that dev teams were asked to do too much with too little time to do it. That along with the fact that this is the first incarnation of the semi-regular series on next-gen systems doesn't make development any easier.
I wish all the developers involved good luck on their next projects and hope that the people that are responsible for project scheduling learn from this.
The true successor of Spider-Man 64.
MikeTV: I like it too. All I was expecting when I bought it was a bigger, slightly better looking version of Spider-Man 2. And that's what I got. Nothing super special added in. Honestly, I find swinging and racing so much fun, I would have bought it even if the rest of the game wasn't included with it. Everyone needs to calm down.
Look at it this way: At least EA didn't make it. And totally screw up Marvel Nemesis AND Super Man. Dayamn.
I like the game too... >.>
Maquis, speaking as someone who lost his first lover to AIDS, possibly before you were born, I found the strip where the store couldn't get rid of Vista AIDS edition to be pretty damn funny. So unless you can trump my pity party, I think you should chill the fuck out on Penny Arcade.
