Taste Of Tomorrow: Oblivion 360/PS3 Comparison
So, in all honesty, this video comparing the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is less entertaining or informative than it is illustrative. Of a trend to come. With exclusivity evaporating left and right, at least for the current development cycle, we're going to be seeing a lot more of this kind of side-by-side quality and gameplay comparisons, I reckon.
The video here is a well-edited and well-presented example of some of the nitpicky hooey we'll be treated to as devs and publishers dole out more energy to casting their massively expensive nets as widely as possible. Here, the PS3 version appears to run just barely more crisply and smoothly than the 360, although it looks like that can be a questionable merit: to my eyes, the 360's slightly fuzzier faces (Emperor Uriel Septim, particularly) look better than the PS3's. Of course, it's all a bit of a toss-up.
Even if you've got both systems, social networking can play a much stronger role than performance. I tried out Marvel: UA on the PS3, where it inarguably looked better, but ended up swapping it out for the 360 version because that's what my friends have. That scenario will evolve as the systems mature, but I digress: regardless of your personal criteria, look forward to quite a few more of these...

I wouldn't appear to be trolling or anything but the game looks way better on my computer. < _ <
The jail of the beginning in particular, my God, how ugly the walls looked in this video! O_o
I wonder if this was before or after the recent 360 update. To me the ps3 version looks washed out but not a huge diffrence.
uhm they both look the same to me
I must admit I *am* a sucker for draw distance, and the PS3 seems to be better at that, as well as the bump mapping - though it's hard to say from a low-res video.
Owning neither system yet (after some bad decisions in the 90s, I've become quite the late adopter) however, I see two price tags - since Oblivion will *not* run on my PC, it's either a PS3 and Oblivion or the 360 and Oblivion and 168 lousy beers ( or about 1000 Panaché, a french beer/lemonade mix that is just to die for...).
My conlusion: 360 after the die-shrink, screw those subtle differences. And yes, Septim looks fugly in the PS3 version. Odd.
But, is this a problem with the consoles or the developers? Will porting from 360 to PS3 include upgrading the graphics for the system, or utilize the same graphics even though it isn't set up to fully utilize the graphics power of the PS3?
Just went through it a second time. F them for switching sides between shots...
The lighting on the PS3 uses HDR to its fullest - anybody remember the VGCats comic about that? ^^
4 realz on the draw distance. The 360 had crazy pop ups.
To be honest, the PS3 does look to be slightly smoother than the X-Box 360 in rendering some of the scenes.
I concur with Steelskin, though. It does look considerably better on the PC, as well as being able to run just as smooth as the PS3 version on a high-end setup.
PS3 Uriel Septim looked freakish!
