Sony Says Final Fantasy XIII Exclusivity Under Discussion

Final Fantasy XIII box art from VGBoxArt.

Sony France executive Georges Fornay admitted to French news publication Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (subscription required) that Square is currently discussing the viability of exclusivity of Final Fantasy XIII. Here's the word from the horse's mouth:

"The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day [in France] 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games [for the PS3] by the end of 2007...As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion."

Monsieur Fornay is confident, however, that PlayStation 3 will do very well in France. He also mentioned that France alone would be getting 150,000 PS3s out of the 1 million allocated for Europe. I certainly hope for Sony's sake that it sells well. For those of you wondering what he might have had to say concerning the new PS3s lacking the Emotion Engine and the consequential crippling of the PS3's backwards compatibility capabilities, he had this to say:

"Now, if you ask me whether this was a blow to the launch, I would say that [Sony] would have done better to be sure that the console would be completely backward compatible before announcing it. But hey, when it becomes clear what the PS3 is capable of, gamers won't really fancy playing PS2 [games] anymore..."

GameSpot attempted to contact Square-Enix, but their calls had not been returned as of press time. I'm very curious to see how this unfolds, but I foresee a multi-platform Final Fantasy XIII if Square-Enix hopes to make more money and not risk losing money...just look at why Capcom is bringing Devil May Cry 4 to the Xbox 360 (though, to be fair, Capcom have also had great success on the 360). Devil May Cry is hardly the only one to cross the aisle, so to speak. GameSpot notes that such other titles to cross over to the 360 are Saint's Row and Assassin's Creed.

So, what do you think?

Blah that really sucks if it does go multi-platform. I've always been a fan of all the sysems but with Sony losing the exclusives to their system i'm seeing my money spent on the PS3 as a waste ;;. Usually games that go multi-platmorm are spread thin and look like crap since the time and effort get cut short when it needs to be ported to other systems. Not only that but the fact that sony is cutting down the backwards comp. That's a kick in the face considering that's the biggest reason I baught it. I hope hoping for an all in one kinda thing, now it's just turning into half-ass. I guess i'll just keep an eye out on the media to see what happens.

I think that people are blowing this out of proportion.

Maybe, after what happened with DMC4, Sony is now meeting more one-on-one with developers and encouraging them to keep the title on their platform, similar to what Microsoft has been doing (ie. throwing money at people).

Real or not, the fact that is even in question is news enough. Publishers are realizing that the ps3 simply does not have the install base to budget out large sums of money for a single game. I predict that for the next year the only big-budget exclusives you'll see on the ps3 are made by Sony themselves.

oh please let this be true... oh please let this be true... i would love to see FFXIII on the 360 that would be so awesome... and me being a wii60 fanboy and sony hater, i'll have no choice but do a dance on sony's grave with my ds, wii, and 360 in my arms.

As much as I dislike Microsoft(the evil empire it is), and practically swore to myself that I would never buy an xbox, the 360 is looking more and more attractive everyday, what with eternal sonata and now something like this.

On another note, looking at the picture, since when has the esrb given a mature rating to final fantasy?

oh baby, im happy now. the two games i wanted, DMC4 and FFXIII comin to the 360. i think that the PS3 is going to die, alongside the Blu-Ray

God damnit I hate microsoft. If Sony is willing to let all the others slip away they at least need to keep FF where it belongs!

" need to keep FF where it belongs!" on Nintendo? Since that is where it started.

As far as the Install rate of the Xbox 360 is just as crappy as the PS3 so moving games to the 360 won't help publisher much either

wow i had to read that a few times to understand what it meant. lol nintendo may not be able to have the same graphics as ps3. However it does have better gameplay factor to it. So i don't think i would be disappointed... i would just have more fun with it.

I'm sure that's it's capable of something of the sort. FFxii looks beautiful, and that was LAST generation on the technically inferior ps2 hardware. With the wii as popular as it is, Square would be foolish to look over it for the main ff series. PS2 had last generation's largest install base, and, with it's current rate of sales, the wii is likely to be this generation's largest.

Im not being a fanboy, i just love to see smug companies loose their dominant market share.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
