PS2 Emulation List To Support Over 1,200 Titles

ps2.jpg

It has only been a few weeks since Sony announced that European PS3s would be shipped without the Emotion Engine, which supports backwards compatibility. Since then gamers on both sides of the Atlantic have been concerned about the eventual removal of the Emotion Engine from PS3s, and what that means to their PS2 library. The PS2’s library of games is easily it’s strongest asset. Many gamers are concerned about upgrading to the PS3, if it means that they have to hold onto their PS2 to be able to play their favorite games.

Fortunately Phil Harrison recently announced that over 1,200 PS2 titles will be backwards compatible on the PS3 as of March 23rd, with the 1.60 firmware upgrade. Sony will continue to add games to the compatibility list with further firmware upgrades. Now the advantage of having software emulation is the ability of the PS3 to upscale PS1 and PS2 titles to 720p/1080i. Pretty nice tradeoff. Although I would recommend PS2 owners to hold onto their system for a little while, until the list gets a bit more beefy. The Emotionless PS3’s will begin shipping in the US and Japan around April or May.
