Korea Uses Mind Control To Abolish Game Addiction?
You can't make this shit up. Well you can, but it'd be hard to link to. It seems that the Korean government is stepping up its efforts to protect Korean youth from the dangers of what is apparently rampant gaming addiction - with subliminal messages. Tired of having to field questions about gamers who've literally gamed themselves to death, Korea is turning to a company named Xtive, which uses subliminal black-ops-sounding technology to...hell, read for yourselves:
We incorporated messages into an acoustic sound wave telling gamers to stop playing. The messages are told 10,000 to 20,000 times per second. Game users can’t recognize the sounds. But their subconscious is aware of them and the chances are high they will quit playing.
The tech looks like it needs to be licensed by game companies and incorporated into games. Install mind-control software to get kids to stop playing games? Yeah, that sounds like an idea that will be met with open arms by game publishers and designers everywhere, right?
Game companies can install a system, which delivers the inaudible sounds after it recognizes a young user has kept playing after a preset period of time… We can easily change the messages. In this sense, the potential for this technology is exponential.
Oh good, the potential is unlimited! Didn't Oppenheimer have a line like that in the early days? GamePolitics points out that subliminal advertising has been banned for decades in several countries, but I'm just as curious to see what kind of MEMS device or "Wrath of Khan" earwig they use to get Blizzard veeps to use the damn thing in the first place!
