European PS3 Not Keen On Bending Backwards

European PlayStaion 3 backwards compatibility crippled?

Before you jump on my back, I know that is the British flag accompanied by English Pounds...but it was the most appropriate pic I could find. Now, to the news. The European's first glimpse of the PS3's backwards compatibility is not as pretty as some would have hoped. Which of these games do you think are playable on the 'new' PS3?

  • God of War
  • MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
  • MGS 3: Snake Eater
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Guitar Hero 2
  • Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
  • Okami
  • GTA: Liberty City Stories
  • Eragon
  • Final Fantasy X-2
  • Ratchet & Clank 3
  • Lumines Plus

If you haven't already seen this on other sites, you might have guessed wrong. Out of this initial batch of 12 test titles, only Eragon passed. The rest simply would not run. However, it is assumed that this initial batch of PS3s are running the 1.5 version of the firmware and that European owners will be greeted with the version 1.6 firmware upon connecting to the mighty internets. Let us hope that is the case for you people. If not? Our hearts go out to you, but remember, the 360 had a spotty list of backwards compatible titles at its launch. So, we can only hope that Sony will give those old PS2 titles some love...especially since these 'new' emotionless PS3s will eventually worm their way to the rest of the world.

Phil Harrison said "1 000 PS2 titles compatible with the european PS3 the 23rd of march". I think we can have confidence in him, no ?

AJ said:

@Khaliel: He said 1,000. You might be confused with the european decimal seperator notation 1,000 european games would be 1.000 games for US readers.

AJ, I'm pretty sure that when Phil said it, he said "one thousand" as it's pretty impratical to pronounce it as "one comma zero zero zero".

By saying 1000 PS2 games will be compatible, he didn't mean 1000 GOOD GAMES. ..

I'm sure Crazy frog Racer and all those horrible barbie games will work though.

Big surprise. Oh well.

BTW What is the emotion chip supposed to do again?

Why the hell did I know it was Eragon? Oh because of everything sony is screwing up, and after all the useless crap they've spoken, I knew that the worst game on the list would just make sense. Screw you sony.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
