Epic Says No To PS3 Exclusives

markrein1.jpg

Just a short time after calling the PS3 "the one to beat," Epic Games VP Mark Rein comes out against PS3 exclusivity:

I think the opportunity to do an exclusive has passed. I don't see Sony offering us a really great deal today to make that ass-kicking PlayStation 3 game, because by the time we finished, there would already be hundreds of great games on the platform. Gran Turismo, Killzone - they'll be on the sequels to those games by the time our game would come out, so it's just a timing thing.

I'm kinda glad to hear this, but for a different reason - I actually buy George Fornay's reasoning that as the cost and complexity of developing games increases, there will be less room to play favorites and more reason to have a business model that gives a game as much exposure as possible.

Exclusivity seems like it will become an increasingly rare bird, and of course increasingly attractive to Sony or Microsoft, but ultimately prohibitively expensive for all but the most critical of third-party games (but then, how else would you have described Final Fantasy XIII's position in the upcoming PS3 lineup?). In-house developers, of course, will still make their Halos and their Gods of War...

I dunno: what say we all?

If anything hope exclusivity is decreased less and less across the years. I wanna play what everyone is playing regardless of hardware.

I'm tempted to say too little too late.
When I was young and the only system I had was a Master System, I hated that I couldn't play any of the NES games on it (though the MS had its own array of awesome games). Nowadays I buy whatever system I want (which generally means all of them) and so it doesn't really matter anymore.
But for those kids whose parents only get them one system I say: DOWN WITH EXCLUSIVITY!
That being said, I'm not planning on getting a PS3 before it's price drops to at least 400-450. So the less exclusives it gets, the better.
And Sony prides itself on the PS3 being so much more than something to play games on, so it really shouldn't matter to them. Yeah right.
Then again, all versions should be the same or at least be released at the same time. I bought RE4 for the GC, but I would have waited if I knew it would go to the PS2 with additional content.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
