Pixel Magic With Paul Robertson
From the creator of Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle, comes another adorable pixel creation in the form of a music video for Architecture in Helsinki’s Do The Whirlwind. For those of you unfamiliar with Paul Robertson, he creates animations which look like 2D sprite based video games. His visual style is consistent throughout his work. The character designs are similar to Pirate Baby, but this time in full color.
Roberton’s work is heavily influenced by video games from the pixel style to the visual metaphors he uses to convey action and story. At one point in this video a huge mechanical fish pops out of the water to eat all of the band on a boat, which then transitions to an overhead view of a Pac Man board with the fish eating all of the universe.
His style is very creative, and indicative of the video game generation. Gaming is a powerful medium. We are seeing more artists creating art influenced by video games and I believe that there will be more out there as gaming becomes more widespread and less inclusive. The stigma of the solitary nerd confined in his parents’ basement playing video games for an existence, will hopefully be shattered by artists and developers with a love for the game.
For more of Paul Robertson’s work, check out his livejournal page for info on upcoming projects. I’ve also included another video of his called Devil Eyes, about the birth of a starman, after the jump.
