American "Paprika" Trailer Appears On The Net
Anime nerds, rejoice! Quicktime.com has posted an American moviehouse trailer for the upcoming anime film, Paprika. After viewing the incredible imagery of the film's preview, I read that it's been directed by Satoshi Kon, the man who brought us the brilliant and disturbing Perfect Blue back in 1997. This means two things: the movie's art style will probably be second to none (save, perhaps, Miyazaki), and the story will most likely be (literally), a mindfuck. Don't believe me? Fine, read this synopsis:
29 year old Dr. Atsuko Chiba is an attractive but modest Japanese research psychotherapist whose work is on the cutting edge of her field. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless 18 year old “dream detective,” code named PAPRIKA, who can enter into people’s dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis.
Satoshi's films often pull a Pan's Labyrinth-like effect of mixing heavy amounts of fantasy with painfully stark realities. As a result, I've often found myself re-watching his movies so I can fully grasp the entire story by picking up on subtleties I missed the first time. Personally, I can't wait for June 1st, when it'll hit U.S. theaters in a limited engagement.

Allez les legumes! Though it looks awfully nice, and definitely akira-esque.
I have watched it several months ago (we tend to have this stuff in advance in France) - the movie is interesting, the music by Susumu Hirasawa (who did the Berserk OST) is incredible.
You can even download the main theme song here on his website :

It definitely looks good I'm IN japan right now and I have not seen ads for it anywhere I wonder if I can see it in theaters?
OH MY GAWD! You just made my year! *worships Satoshi Kon*
It looks amazing. I can't wait to see this.
It reminded me a bit of "Paranoia Agent"...looking it up, I see that Satoshi Kon worked on Paranoia Agent as well! Also, I love the Paprika theme...Susumu Hirasawa (another Paranoia Agent alumnus) rocks!
I was lucky enough to see it last month at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and it was amazing. I'm not really a fan of anime, but it was crazy good.
And the music...I can't wait to buy the soundtrack.
This looks absolutely amazing, thanks BoT. Also thanks to Pyram for the link.
While I do believe Perfect Blue was brilliant, it still managed to leave me cold. I think it was because there was no real hero, just a victim. Paprika looks incredible though. Helping people work through some pretty monstrous neuroses sounds pretty heroic to me! I'm definitely looking forward to this. And the theme to the trailer is beautiful.
AWE. SOME.
Loved Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress was very good, and Tokyo Godfathers was FANTASTIC. (seriously, if you haven't, see it) Even Paranoia Agent was wicked cool, even if it didn't always make sense.
So I'm thrilled to see that he's got a new movie, and I look forward to picking up a bootleg at some point after they botch a US release.
Shame one me for not recognizing Hirasawa. Forces from Berserk will forever be stuck in my head. I need to see this movie. Maybe I'll buy the french DVD...
Hmm, kinda reminds of that god awful J.Lo movie "The Cell" - only good!
