XBLA Relaxes For Large Castlevania, Whimpers Softly

Good news from Microsoft: the sacred 50MB download limit for Xbox Live Arcade Games is being gently massaged and teased to open up and allow the entry of that throbbingly sexy big boy, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Konami’s Symphony is one the best-known and best-loved modern Castlevania installments, and the news that it will be available as a one-shot download will come as a relief to gamers who were worried it not might arrive in toto or were disturbed by the piecemeal microtransactions of Lumines Live. A free demo, also exceeding the 50MB limit (which further bolsters hope that the game will arrive in an unreduced form) will be available for download as well.
The 50MB limit has its origins in the size restrictions of 64MB memory cards, on which Microsoft wanted gamers to be able to store a complete XBLA game. I’m not sure how I feel about that, having never even bought a memory card for my 360, but it seems like a reasonably conservative policy. Microsoft is certainly still standing behind the 50MB limit, as Xbox Live Arcade group manager Greg Canessa recently told GameSpot:
“If any games do exceed 50 MB, it’s for a very specific reason that would ensure that the gameplay experience is the best it can be.”
That’s the kind of talk I like to hear. Best gameplay experience possible? Yes please. More! Deeper!
