Sonic Returns To The Wii, With A Purpose
Poor Sonic has had a rough time for a while. In the 16-bit era, he was champion, and responsible for the success of the Genesis in the States. The whole slogan “Genesis does what Nintendon’t.” was referring to the fact that the Super Nintendo couldn’t handle a speedy game like Sonic. He came out with a few great games in the beginning, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix were standout titles, but the rest were just passable at best. Sonic had a brief comeback with Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast, but serious fans were upset by the transition to 3D. The gameplay never lived up to the fluidity of the original batch of games. The speed puttered and stuttered and it was difficult to maintain any sense of speed. After Sonic Adventure, Sega released a sequel and the miserable Sonic Heroes with the three party system, which came off like botched attempt at a terrible idea. Don’t even get me started on the abortion that was Shadow the Hedgehog. I’ll spare you the mundane details.
Hopefully Sonic and the Secret Rings on the Wii will rectify all of these previous issues. This is quite a mountain of problems to scale, but it is possible. Give us some old-school Sonic speed, ditch the tag-along gang, and we should be in business. Sega has delivered on all fronts. There will be no sidekicks, no pause in gameplay for boring fighting and exploration segments, just raw speed and a blue hedgehog. Sega is trying to bring the series back to its roots, but in 3D.
The game will be played on rails, but you hold the Wii remote sideways to steer him as he speeds along. From the video it looks the game plays like 2D-3D platformers Klonoa or Pandemonium, but from behind the character, not the side. Hopefully this is the adrenaline shot the series needed.
Besides the main adventure, the Secret Rings will include a variety of “party games” for some multiplayer mayhem. No details have been released about what types of party games will be included.
Check back to the game’s official site for updates, until the game hits the shelves in March.

I hope it turns out well. I still play Sonic the Hedgehog every once in awhile, wishing that it's nex-gen remake wasn't a steaming pile of poo. :D
Oh, and one last thing, it wouldn't be a proper Wii game without.... PARTY GAMES! :D
The gameplay seems further on rails oriented than before...
not gonna lie, that game looks sweet. sonic is the coolest animal ever
It looks very nice.
My only problem with it is:
This was one whole level. How many will there be? I'm guessing, something between 6 and 10?
Soooo.... again one of those very short games then.
Anyway, it looks better than all those other 3D Sonics together :P
Wow, A sonic game that might not suck! the power of the wii is amazing! lol
Looks pretty cool. To be honest I haven't played a Sonic game since Sonic Rush (and I think before that it was Sonic R!) so I haven't had my hopes destroyed yet. Come on little blue feller, you can do it!
Not to be a nitpick, but when the Super Nintendo hit the market, Sega curled up into a little ball and cried. Since however they had a 2 year headstart on Nintendo they thought it fit to ridicule the 8-Bit opponent NES with their blast processing and 12 Mhz CPU and whatnot. Just wanted to point that out. Carry on.
we should all watch the angry nintendo nerd's "wii salute" thing. it's a great remake of the sega-nintendo war
I keep hearing everyone (EVERYONE) hyping this game all of the sudden. And I think, wow it sounds fun, maybe I'll get it. Then I remember that everyone also hyped all of the crappy Sonic games that they now refer to as piles of shit. So yeah, don't get your hopes up.
I'm still kinda iffy about it. It's for sure a rental though!
