Gears Of War Update Backfires?

It’s a bit early to say for sure, but Aeropause is reporting anecdotal evidence that the Gears of War update, which was intended to address a problem with VGA display on 4:3, non-widescreen televisions, has actually made things worse.

The original problem occurred with the game running at resolutions higher than 480 through VGA cables to a 3:4 screen – the picture was both letterboxed and squished, a problem which anyone who’s experienced can attest is frustrating beyond belief. And ugly.

I’m uncertain if the patch fixed the problem and then made things worse, or simply exacerbated the badness, but a look at some of the pictures in the link above does indeed seem to confirm general ugliness. Now, clearly not a universal problem, but Microsoft’s had other troubles with the Xbox 360 and its attendant services recently, and the looming specter of Xbox Live Anywhere, which might well prove to be a double-edged sword (by stealing the 360’s thunder…and maybe customers), Microsoft needs to have all its ducks in a row.

If anyone’s experienced problems since the GoW update and/or the concurrent 360 update, let us know.
