Fantastic Flash: Samorost 2

Samorost2.jpg

If Samorost 2 has previously eluded your radar, take the time to sit and enjoy this truly excellent point-and-click graphic adventure. The game features some spectacular artwork, and it is marvelous to explore this rich, surreal landscape. Fortunately both Samorost games are in Flash, so they can be played on almost any web browser.

The game begins with the main character losing his puppy, when some alien dog snatchers fly by and steal his best friend. Then it’s your mission to rescue your little buddy and return home. The premise reminds me of another beautiful game, Heart of Darkness, where you loose your puppy and have to rescue him and return home. Samorost 2 is divided into two chapters, the first one is free to play. The second chapter picks up where the first game left off, and is a pay-to-play download for $6.95. The download contains both chapters of Samorost 2, so you can play them back to back.

Here are some accolades for Sarmorost 2, since it’s debut on the web.

~Samorost 2 has been nominated in the “Best Web Browser Game” and “Excellence in Visual Art” category for the 2007 Independent Game Festival
~Flashforward Film Festival 2006
Winner (“Original Sound” category)
~Seoul Net Festival 2006 Winner
(“Best Web-Work”)
~4.5 out of 5 stars by Adventure Gamers

The sights, sounds, and production of this game are really remarkable. It’s visually luscious, you will marvel at the artwork the whole way through. The music and sound create a beautiful marriage of ambient noise mixed with environmental procussion. It’s a delight to explore the landscape and quizzically click on your surroundings, to determine how to get to the next screen. This is some top-notch Flash programming at work. Enjoy!

Oh, I do so love me the Samorost games! I've played them both several time. Even if I know what to do, it's lovely just to look at the art and experience the music. Do yourself a favor and play this!

While a delight to look at, with lovable characters and nifty looking levels, there's very little to inspire me to pay the full price of admission. There's no way to "die" that I can see, and the "puzzles" come down to just clicking what is allowed to be clicked in order to progress without any difficulty. Even though your puppy has been kidnapped, and you gotta escape and alien planet, there's no sense of urgency.

While it's only my opinion, personality and whimsy will only get you so far.

When it comes down to it, this is more like a silent half hour cartoon wherein there are numerous delays while you pixel hunt (turning the wheels to drain a toilet? This reminds of Phoenix Wright, where you have to physically select "Press harder", which would be the "no shit" choice if you want the game to continue). If the second chapter is the same length as the first, there's precious little meat to these bones. A tease of what could have been, which is a shame.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
