Xbox 360 Update Causing Trouble...Again

Microsoft deserves their lumps, too. For the third time in barely a month, an Xbox 360 update caused an outcry against sudden random crashes, bricked consoles (was there ever so brutal a phrase?), and display issues of varying stripes and persuasions. First we had November’s fall update that bricked modded 360s with a dollop of innocent casualties, not to mention derailing Xbox Live for many of us; hot on the heels of that update came the Thanksgiving Video Marketplace launch, which caused problems mostly to its extraordinary popularity – that’s understandable.
This time, however, the dashboard update meant to address some of the 1080p display issues that came bundled with the previous fall update looks to have given some gamers more problems than it fixed. Most of the problems so far seem to affect those using VGA connections with resolutions lower that 1080p – so don’t do that!
Major Nelson claims they’re on it but gave no timeframe.

Are these updates mandatory? Because from the sound of it, if I ever get a 360 I’d be better off never updating it.
They do prompt you, Shin, but I’ve never tried refusing one. I don’t think you can voluntarily remain downgraded like you can (sorta) with the PSP…anyone know?
It could be mandatory, note that in some games, I think only original Xbox titles, if there is an update for that title, you have to go with the flow…I think. While doing that, I would suspect that MS would bundle the dashboard update with it, as well.
Anybody here actually having problems? I updated and lo and behold, everything is still fine. Of course, I’ve made no mods, and followed all the directions for set up.
I have never had an issue updating my system…
I’ve never had a problem with an update.
