Sony And Amazon To Team Up With Digital Downloads?

Remember how a couple of months ago it was announced that Target was no longer going to carry UMD movies for the PSP due to, and I believe this is a technical term, sales numbers only matched by Hulk Hogan’s rock album.
Now it looks even more like the UMD movie is going the way of the dinosaurs because rumblings are starting to surface regarding Sony talking with online distributors about digital PSP movie downloads. Amazon.com is on the reported list of distributors, as are MovieLink and CinemaNow.
Movies will be downloaded to a PC and then transferred onto a memory stick, according to a report from the Financial Times.
The move could be seen as the final nail in the coffin for the UMD movie, with companies such as Paramount, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. all reassessing the format after disappointing sales.
This sounds like a much more viable media format and delivery process, since it’ll cut down on manufacturing costs and will also allow the movies to be a lot cheaper for those who want to watch them on their PSP… provided they don’t just go ahead and rip a DVD using PSP Video or the like.
