Sony Admits To Viral Website

A couple days ago I posted an article about a new blog called All I Want For Christmas Is A PSP that was believed to be a viral site put out by Sony to push the PSP for the holidays. The website was revealed to be owned by an ad company and eventually the breadcrumb trail led back to Sony. Always one to admit to their mistakes, Sony fessed up in an blog entry on said website.
Busted. Nailed. Snagged. As many of you have figured out (maybe our speech was a little too funky fresh???), Peter isn’t a real hip-hop maven and this site was actually developed by Sony. Guess we were trying to be just a little too clever. From this point forward, we will just stick to making cool products, and use this site to give you nothing but the facts on the PSP.
Wow, talk about your viral marketing gone wrong! Note to Sony: next time you want to sell one of your products with a “hip youngster,” make sure that “hip youngster” isn’t 35 years old. I’d show you the embarrassing “rap” video that accompanied the site, but they’ve all been removed…nice.

They’re still around, consumerist.com reuploaded them to youtube. Also, DON’T WATCH THEM IF YOU VALUE YOUR SANITY.
Hahaha! Got you Sony, fuckers! Oh Sony. You’re friggin idiots.
xoxo
The best part is that apparently the reason they ‘came clean’ was because the FCC came a-knocking. Turns out their campaign wasn’t so much viral as it was deceptive.
I looked at the website when it was first posted. Sayin it was too “funky fresh” was underestimating it. I’m not into all the l33t speak (my momma taught me proppa gramma ;)), but good lord was it overdone. I know I was biased before even viewing the page, but it seriously gave me a headache trying to go thru the 4 or 5 official posts on the site. And the “rap” video was horrible. I think I lasted about 20 seconds before having to turn it off. They even offered the “dope” beats to download. That was funny.
If a company is going to do a viral campaign, invest more than 20 bucks. Hell, give an actual 15 year old control of website and give him the $20 for it and he could’ve done better.
Bad sony! NO presents for you this Christmas!!!
What happened to Sony? What happened to their ability to execute…. ANYTHING?
BTW, it was the FTC and not the FCC who came a-knocking. But I think the ridicule would have eventually made them take the site down anyway (albeit without ‘fessing up.)
Ack, meant FTC, sorry.
Actually, somebody put the rap video back up on youtube… and it’s even more horrible than most people could imagine.

When you said viral site, I was pleasantly surprised to find out it wasn’t actual viruses like their BMG rootkit debacle.
