Molyneux Roars For XNA

Microsoft released its XNA Game Studios Express developing kit on Tuesday, and already world-famous game designers are a bitter green with envy at the opportunity it presents young independent game designers. Well, at least Lionhead Studios pride leader Peter Molyneux, the mind behind the Fable and Black & White games, thinks so.

Molyneux told those gathered at a launch event:

“You’re lucky bastards, because the web is a fantastic place to get your ideas out there. If XNA really is going to be the YouTube of game design then that will be a brilliant, brilliant thing.”

So far, so sane. But now the reasons why I love Molyneux and his fantastic mouth start to become clear; if you want to make it gaming, he cautions:

“You have to have a great excitement for what you do. You cannot do this without finding it almost orgasmically exciting.”

“There are times, honestly, that I’ve been explaining an idea to someone and I’ve just broken down in tears. That’s just so compulsive, you cannot resist someone that is that excited about something.”

You can’t buy that kind of commitment with a pair of sidearms and a Halliburton briefcase full of $100s. You can’t buy that kind of heart with shock therapy. Whether he’s right or not – and if I’m even sure I know what he’s talking about – I suppose that remains to be proven. By all the eager young game designers out there just waiting to make me something fun to play with…best get crackin’.

Legally sanctioned homebrew…. if there were anyone I thought WOULDN’T be the first to do it, it would be Microsoft.

(Of course, they’re not the first…. the Bally Astrocade came out in 1978 and had a tape drive just so you could write your own games in BASIC and share them with your friends. And other, even more narrowly marketed products have come out since then, like the Net Yaroze. But XNA is the first one with actual potential.)
