Impressions of Wii Component Cables

A monkey’s red a$$ never looked so good! Well, at least in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I finally got my Wii component cables in from Nintendo and I have to say, there is a noticeable improvement in visual quality when using these things…but, obviously, it doesn’t tighten up the graphics to be as good as the Xbox 360 or PS3. Not that it really matters, but it’s nice to have a clearer picture when it’s available to you.

One thing I definitely noticed was that the picture was more vivid. It produced better ‘dark colors,’ and the color, in general, was much richer using the component cables as opposed to the standard RCA cables. On the other hand, jaggies became more visible, but weren’t really that bad at all in Twilight Princess. In the end, I believe the component cables were a sound purchase. I would happily welcome a patch to allow for higher resolutions as it would just be nice to have if you have a high definition television.

Cubed 3 has provided an audio/visual guide to the Wii right here, in case you want to see what other options are available to you. I would recommend the component cables to all you HD TV owners out there if you can get your hands on them. As I recall, they should be available to you at EB/GS, Best Buy, Target & Wal-Mart on the 15th of December, or you can purchase them online at Nintendo’s Online Store. Good luck and don’t strain your wrists! Oh, and don’t forget to switch over to 480p and widescreen if ya’ get them.

Component cables have apparently been delayed till late Janurary in BandM stores. They’re available in “limited quantities” on Nintendo’s site.

Okay, so I got my component cables today via Nintendo’s online store. Yay! Question though. Is anyone who actually owns the cables having any issues? Zelda looks great… even Wii Sports looks a little better, however, as soon as I use the home button on the wii remote and select wii menu, the confirmation page (Are you sure you want to return to the wii menu? yes/no?) has a hard time rendering. Its almost like the TV is having a hard time switching from 480i to 480p or whatever resolution the wii is broadcasting in. OR, the wii isn’t sending 480p signals all the time or inconsistently. I dunno… I have a brand new Sony XBR 1080p TV… can’t be the TV!!! Anyone else having this issue? Am I making any sense??

About to plug in the ‘ol composite cables again… :-(
