The U.S. Copyright Office Allows Hacking Of Abandonware Copy Protection

The U.S. Copyright Office stated new rules regarding cracking copy protection of abandoned titles. Retrogaming enthusiasts will jump for joy with their newly achieved freedom. Of course, cracking copy protection only applies to “archival” purposes.

The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) has been formed to criminalize any cracking of copyright protection. It’s now going to be legal to hack copy protection on archaic computer software and video games. It’s important to make sure that the software you plan on hacking is officially considered abandonware. If it’s covered, happy hacking one and all!
