Mikey And Tiny And Wii: A Love Triangle

Mighty Mikey Muscles Up!

Video game journalists all over the metaverse are opening up their super special early press kit Wii boxes and playing all kinds of super mega awesome Wii games such as Wii Sports and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and other titles so amazingly super mega awesome that your brain would explode if you even knew of them. That’s what folks who write about games are doing right now, everywhere.

Sadly, we are not among them.

So it fell to me and our stalwart Mikey (whom I’d conned into coming into Manhattan as part of my continuing effort to put mind-control chips into every GayGamer staff member), to grab our Wiis the old-fashioned way. We queued up at the Nintendo World Store, hoping for a chance to play Twilight Princess but, as reader Wootini experienced, that game was so mind-bogglingly popular at the Wii Preview Party that an employee told us it wasn’t feasible for them to run it on the everyday demo units – the lines would shut down the store.

Disappointed but understanding, we waited for only a minute or two before taking a crack at Wii Sports, which Mikey is pictured playing. Look at him go! Mikey kicked ass at tennis, which was amazingly simple to play. (I sucked. I mean, I sucked. Hard.) Despite my outré suckage, the controls were fun and workable: just a flick of the wrist to the right or left as the ball approached gave either member of our doubles team a solid hit or wicked backhand, and serving made me downright giddy.

Downstairs I hogged the boxing game while Mikey scored some Animal Crossing: Wild World exclusive downloads. Boxing I loved. First off, it’s an actual workout – more like light dancing than actual boxing, but I broke a sweat all the same. With the nunchuck plugged into the Wiimote, keeping my dukes up to protect my face, jabbing fiercely with my right while waiting for the perfect left hook…it freaking rocked. So I made up for my tennis ineptitude with some serious virtual whoop-ass.

After that we were done with the Wii for the night, and once Mikey dragged me away from yet another Nintendo merchandise binge, we headed out into the realms of fabulous NYC nightlife. Fun!

Mikey=hot. but i went to this weird site or whatever and it had a paper Wiimote on it and you could cut it out and tape/glue it all together. allthough it is flimsy, it is fun. and it gets me in the mood for the Wii. i actually stand up with it and pretend i’m playing Wii Tennis, or Wii Golf. its alot of fun. but there is one more thing needed to play with a paper Wiimote: imagination!

Here’s the site for the paper Wiimote:

it is hard to tape. well, its hard to put together at all.

Man, you guys should’ve told me when you were going! I went back on Thursday evening after work and played Wario Ware, Golf and bowling. No Zelda running (for the reasons you explained) and I didn’t care about Excite Truck. Eh. But I couldn’t wait until launch day to get my hands on a Wiimote again. And there aren’t any lines at the Nintendo Store anymore. I wrote up my thoughts on those game in the forum. I still can’t wait until the 19th! If you’re going back, we should hang!

Okay, thanks guys. I’m blushing here from your comments. (I think it’s a funny looking pic myself because of the grimace I’m making whilst trying to hit the tennis ball with the Wiimote.) I had fun playing the Wii though. I hope my plan to find one on the 19th works out. It will be even better if I can find a copy of Twilight Princess the same day.
